I don't remember it being that big a deal years ago. Seems to have gone the same way as Halloween, an excuse to clog the world with throwaway plastic shite making a small fortune for some into the bargain.
I know the Irish have always celebrated it in some way or other, but the lure of the bandwagon has turned it into something it never was.... A parody. When I see people dressed like leprechauns, I genuinely feel embarrassed for real Irish folk. Most I know have spent a lifetime trying to get away from wank stereotyping.
