Happy York Away Day

12 of us took my mate’s Dad Ken (who I sat next to at Maine Road) to the game in corporate for his 70th birthday, he had the early signs of Alzheimer’s but despite a 0-0 draw we had a great day, Ken played for Stalybridge and one of the lads got Buzzer to crack on he’d seen him playing. Buzzer was walking past us, stopped in his tracks looked at Ken and said “Kenny Rodgers, I do t believe it, I saw you when you were Captain of Stalybridge” the smile on Ken’s face was brilliant. He lapsed into full blown Alzheimer’s shortly after that but it’s a memory we all cherish.
I once saw your mate's dad. He was running away from some home supporters after a match at Edgeley Park... and everyone considered him a coward at the county

He got quite a few of those lines mate, he was only a small guy (about 5ft 5”, like me) but he had the heart of a lion. He ran a Conservative Club (he was staunch Labour) for many years.

Me and my best mate, Ken’s son, turned up 2 minutes late for last orders one night after football, a Committee member told Ken he couldn’t serve us so we had to go home. A few weeks later the Tories were electioneering in the district and the same Committee member turned up about 15 minutes after last orders with the Mayor of Tameside (think he was called Greenhalch), they asked Ken for drinks and he virtually told him to fuck off, “if my lad can’t get a drink after last orders even the Mayor isn’t getting served”. That was the beginning of the end for Ken who had been the Steward for many years.

A great guy who was a big blue and a good friend of mine even though we were about 25 years apart in age, mischievous smile and great company.

It seems longer than 25 yrs ago.
But then again I liked a smoke back then, so smoking a big reefer on the terrace during that game probably blunted out the shambolic position we found ourselves in with that result.
I remember it getting messy in York later after the game. Some very pissed off blues that day

Were you in that little knot of scallywags that half heartedly sang 'skin up, if you love City' when someone was building? I was there with my old fella, who had had 'a couple' of pints obviously, and he misheard the words and joined in with 'sing up, if you love City'. He'd have been mortified if he'd known what was really being sang!!

Was right behind the goal and there was scuffle between City fans and the crowd parted a little bit just as my mate was lining the skins I was holding.
Crazy days back then following the blues but wouldn't change it for anything

Were you at Bury for the Friday night game? A Blue right in front of us had a heart attack just before kick off, (I learned he died), the Paramedics were trying to revive him but many others in the stand were unaware of the incident and were singing “I’m City til I die”. Proper shook me up that seeing someone fighting for his life.

I always looked at Fulham away as a really low point. Thought we were going to piss the league after beating Blackpool on opening day but massively brought back down to earth after that one. We got hammered!

Yeah thunder and lightning, penalty miss but was unaware of the incident.
We'd all been on the piss from Heywood up to Bury.
City took over that Friday night

Yep, we saw that Bruce (Jones?) geezer off Coronation Street that night, he’d had a few scoops. Also Macclesfield in the open end when the Goat scored the last minute goal, thunder and lightning and a very dark sky, happy days :-).
