Hard To Be Here

The fundamental issue is that some fans kidded themselves into the notion that winning the title every season was the norm and it would simply continue forever, and they are struggling to process the fact that this was simply an illusion.
It's true of some, I don't know how many.
The horrible thing about that is that it very exactly describes the mindset that United fans — and most of them, I think, not simply a minority — had got to by 2011. Even now, they still can't quite believe that they have become just another mid-table team. Which is standard fare for just about every club at one point or another (and will be ours at some point in the future). They are shell shocked.

Yes, they are still in a state of general disbelief about their fall. It’s actually nuts when you step back and think about it, given how much they’ve spent to get there.

They are the emperor's new clothes manifest. At every turn they are told how magnificently wonderful they are by an obsequious slither of bought-and-paid-for client media shills and profiteering leeches. Utterly deluded.

Thing is, we had more good times in the ‘80s than the vast majority of football fans.

We had an FA Cup Final, a League Cup Semi Final, a couple of quarter finals, Charlton, Bradford, the 5-1, Trevor Francis, Kazimierz Deyna, beating Liverpool on Boxing Day in 1981 and 1985, drawing at Old Trafford after being 2-0 down and playing in a Micky Mouse Cup Final the next day. Gordon Davies and Mark Lillis!

Plenty of great memories.

Plenty of football fans never get to experience all that in a lifetime.

So maybe it wasn’t that bad.
Huddersfield 1987 ???

It's been the same since time (or the Internet, at least) began. You are not going to get bags of civility and rationality on the day of a defeat, not least one at home to Spurs. I'd actually say a lot of people come here in such circumstances because it serves an emotional purpose - a place to vent and seek comfort amongst like-minded others. In many cases, people don't actually mean what they say, but they're not here for nuance. They're here to serve an emotional purpose and it's never been any different.
You’re right but those people should grow up. It’s football, not life and death, ffs.

That being the case, I doubt it's many of us focs to be honest.
I also reckon on this forum alot who fell into that haven't been to a game in person - sounds sadly familiar to certain others clubs :(

There are certainly a larger number of childish posts that seem to think we should win every game with ease and any player having an off day needs selling, as if it's Football Manager.

We need to improve, but we're in a good position in the league and we're in a good position in the CL. If this is us "suffering" and in transition then it's not bad is it! We still managed an FA Cup final last year despite being abysmal for parts of it. We didn't win, but we went from 1981-2011 without a final so it's still a measure of how strong we still are.

Liverpool will be shell suit shocked when it happens to them again…

I swear to God, there's a sizeable number of our fans (particularly on here) who have become extremely entitled. There was a post on here after the game last night (I won't name the poster).....

" the passing and decision making was League Two standard."

It was at that point, I decided to call it a night, before I said/did something I'd have regretted this morning. The match threads in particular are ridiculous now, specially if we aren't 4 up in 30 minutes.

There is a huge divide between city fans who have been here a while, who went through the crap of those down the road winning everything while we suffered and enjoy the winning now but can still laugh at ourselves when we dont and the newly entitled who think we deserve everything and all players should be cast aside and replaced with shiny new ones as soon as we lose or draw a game.

I think certain people can go over the top. I think its healthy to vent on somewhere like here where players aren't going to hear it and you're not being abusive over to them but I do think Pep and the Owners have absolutely spoiled us rotten with some of the football we've seen, it's been incredible and sometimes I catch myself getting annoyed if we start a bit slow and look lacklustre but then I remember how bad we were when I started supporting us in Division 2 and I can forget about it. I think some people have never seen us play bad and come on here to vent about it and that's okay too.

Emotions run high in match day threads just like they do at the ground, just stupid comments you make at the ground or in the pub aren’t writren down for all to see. Its just football at end of the day. Meant to be a game we love played by the team we love. A bit of perspective needed. Where were you when we were shit…

A significant number of the posters on here have to be Man Utd or Liverpool fans.
