The economy is perhaps the most complex issue in politics at any time. The general public don't fully understand the reasons for recession or growth. What they do understand is the money in their pocket and how much everything costs.

As far as I can see Brown is as well equipped as anyone to lead us out of the recession. World leaders ring him up for advice on the economy. Blair was hated by the end and had he stayed New Labour would have been doomed to a landslide defeat at the next election. Brown, though he probably won't win, will limit the damage.
