But they're NOT shock results and performances, are they? But surely that's football ? Why should England be immune to shock results and performances.
These England youngsters seem to carry the burden for England's past history, which is unfair.
The so-called "top" teams are seeded to get through to the finals and are drawn against the "minnows" for a reason. The reason is, once again, is MONEY. UEFA/FIFA want to ensure maximum viewing figures or their product, so the draws reflect this.
Even in the qualifiers, they are expected to win, and there may be an occasional hiccup, but if you're happy watching that sort of turgid performance on a regular basis to get a result then you do so. I won't, it bores me to tears. When it comes to the competition "proper", they fail miserably as they can't raise their game beyond how they're coached, which appears to be from the pre 1953 coaching manual.
As for "carrying the burden", none of the current team were alive when we last won anything, and were kids in 1996. You'd think that they would want to do something about it, but they're restrained from doing so by outdated thinking and tactics, whereas the rest of the world has moved on.
