I agree mate, and I would have expected it too.
I’m just not prepared to rule out the possibility, however unlikely it may seem, that in reality perhaps concrete assurances over shirt number may not have been discussed (until his new PR firm took over - if it is true that he has a new PR team on board now).

Yes I will note that any mention of the number 23 on this forum regardless of what it relates to will have a disclaimer.

For instance I have a Cavs 23 top and would like to clarify this in no way has anything to do with Foe.

I finished my last message by saying it may have been crossed wires, trying to give you an out. Myself and others immediately knew that when someone mentions “the number 23 retired” exactly what that’s about. Eh, I get what you mean, but I still feel like if it wasn't Chelsea who went in for him, I doubt he would've wanted to leave. I mean, he's talked about how he dreamed of playing for Chelsea when he was younger, and it was mentioned that he felt like he had "unfinished business" there. So I don't think it was a "miss" on our part per se

The conversation was about Beckhams marketing status in relation to his squad numbers. @manimanc then said our 23 was retired because he didn't read the convo.

You just accused me of not understanding marketing and now you're talking about maximising shirt sales..... Players DO NOT make any significant difference to the number of shirts sold by a team year on year, the name on the back is the only thing that changes by and large, the volume does not. Messi/Ronaldo might drive those sales up by 300-500k in year 1 but that's worth between 10-25m to the club maximum, and thats the 2 biggest stars in history. In year 2 it reverts to type, it's no real money in the football world. The rags are the biggest sellers on the planet and they sell 3.25m per year and earn about 10-18m from that, manufacturers pay sponsorship money to clubs and reap the sales revenue. Shirts sales is a complete myth. Players by and large don't generate ADDITIONAL shirt sales.
