My grandad was a born and bred Bradford Yorkshire bloke. In the 60's 'when I were a lad' he called liquorice spice. He may even have called other sweets that but I remember asking if I wanted some spice.

Slightly off topic, but years ago I used to use individual spices, and make curries by blending the spices, adding them at different times etc. A while back I discovered that it is possible to buy pre mixed spice blends which make really good curries. The secret is to only buy those that are packaged in India. E bay or Amazon (or Indian shops if you are lucky enough to have one near), try mixes made by AHMED, SHAN, TOOBA, or MDH.
