Has anyone put their central heating on yet?

Got a great big bin of rock salt near us, council haven't spread it on any pathways, pretty ridiculous as bits have been like an ice rink. I've grabbed handfuls myself and thrown them in problem spots because I dont' fancy going over on my coccyx like I did a couple of years ago, no ta very much.

Just saying, really, because I'm amazed how effective the stuff seems to be.

Log burner all the way for me.
I'm a joiner so free wood which helps.
Heating comes on 1st thing till burner gets us upto temp.
So glad I put the log burner in when I got the house.
You can smell those log burners all over now. In other unconnected news, my asthma seems unusually bad at the moment, can't remember having issues at this time of year before with it but have been using the blue inhaler the last couple of weeks. Probably the dickhead at the end of the street who nearly burned his house down when he installed his own wood burner a few years back. God knows what shite he puts on his.

from the council

Under the Clean Air Act, the whole of Manchester has been designated a Smoke Control Area since 1985 - this is to improve local air quality.

Smoke Control Areas, sometimes called smokeless zones, are areas set by local councils where you can’t emit substantial smoke from a chimney. It's also an offence to 'acquire for use' solid fuel that's not authorised in a Smoke Control Area unless it's for an exempt appliance. People who break these rules can face financial penalties.
How will they know? Mate I’d rather argue the toss with them than freeze.

Plumber said it was the condenser pipe which was frozen.....by the power of modern day telecommunications, some warm water and a heater blowing on the boiler, job done.
Yep that’s the one, if you leave your boiler on tick over it won’t happen as long as it’s been installed right and you can afford it.

Saw a programme which said 8 million people have log burners and they produce more pollution than all the cars in the country! So it’s your fault global warming ;)

Ah!!! we turn it off at night......The control box is so damned confusing trying to set it I gave up and do it manually.
The log burner usually keeps the lounge warm enough to be fair but not the other rooms.

This means you can use a newer DEFRA approved multi fuel (smokeless coal) / wood burner then. I had one installed in September. You just have to burn approved materials such as sub 20% moisture wood & Smokeless coal.

Sorry to hear that from you BM, always thought you were a caring chap. Like u.g. I have a chronic lung condition. For the past months of struggling to breathe, I've been in contact with the environmental health regarding a chap a few houses down. He was shipping his building mate's waste, inclusive of upvc window's into his garden and burning it. Obviously saving them a few bob from legitimate disposal sites. He was given an immediate written warning, the burning outside ceased but I could still smell the same acrid stench. Some night's as you walk out you're hit with this wall of poison.
The EH team asked me to get some more proof of his actions, ie, had he stuck a wood burner in one of his outside sheds, but not being a Frank Marker found it difficult.
The other week I managed to get the EH to come down and although sympathetic said they needed more proof.
Had a chat with a neighbour who informed me there is a chap in the opposite direction who has a wood burner and who also owns a reclaimed woodyard, he certainly ain't using bone fide kiln dried wood. Not long after, due to another breathless, chest crushing, heart bouncing evening, I gave the property a visit, and yes, I was met with a wall of poison. What people don't realise this nightmare that is the log burner creeps into your property like some latter day Trollenberg Terror, it gets into your every room, no exceptions, with literally breath taking results.
My last few weeks, health wise has been probably the worst in my life, every night excessive phlegm production being restricted by constricted passage ways.
After nearly a week in bed
I managed to get in contact with my consultant, who agreed to supply me with steroids for the first time ever. Took my first dose yesterday with surprisingly immediate results, that was until the dreaded terror returned. Just another sleepless, cough laden night ensued, thus getting my head bitten off by the missus this morning.
As I sit here now, I can taste and smell this
unwanted guest, burning nostrils, sore throat, with dysfunctional lungs, certainly not looking forward to tonight.
Guess what, the arseholes who have produced this nightmare, don't give a shit, they're saving money.

They dont spread it on pathways do they? At least Ive never known it. The grit bins are provided by them on streets for the residents to spread it outside their homes and on the paths
