Has anyone successfully learnt a language later in life?

I am about to try and learn Spanish initially to try and pass my Gcse this year. I am just doing an hour a day really from cds in the car etc and home text books.

Any sensible tips?

Find someone to practise it with.

You can find people offering services through Skype etc online.

Consume media in Spanish language.

I've recently started basic Japanese with my 9 year old daughter.

Needless to say she is picking it up far quicker than I am. I can actually feel my brain throbbing after half an hour.

I did do basic French at school, and suprise myself that I do recall more than I expected to. And as planning to go to France next summer (avec un chiens) was thinking about trying to learn more to help the holiday along ...

Yes. It's all about putting the time and effort in.

Spanish is probably about the easiest IMO (Italian similar), so it really shouldn't be too difficult if you have the motivation.

It's important to pick the right method for your learning style though.

Me! I began learning Spanish in 2017 and I love it. I’m 53 and have since been to Valencia twice to attend a language school there and loved every second of the experience. Tips? Escuchar escuchar y escuchar. I listen to Spanish podcasts every day. I started off with Michel Thomas’ cds which were excellent.
I’d recommend Coffee Break Spanish podcasts for beginners. Once you’re at season 3 you’ll be beginning to want more content. No point in going in too deep at first though.
Good luck!
I’ll try and translate the above into Spanish:
¡Yo! No tiene sentido en (shit struggling with the last sentence!!)
You get my point though. If you stick at it you can begin to enjoy the process and it is a nice thing to be able to do. Takes thousands of hours though.
