Has anyone successfully learnt a language later in life?

Supposed to have learning 10k words, but it probably took a lot longer than when younger. Takes a few years to get any good.

Find someone to practise it with.

You can find people offering services through Skype etc online.

Consume media in Spanish language.
When we lived over there the clued up Catalans watched the BBC news, programmes and English films, the guy in the local iron mongers even used to watch speeches on youtube by Tony Blair as he thought he sounded the most English....

Depends on what you define as good and the language. Some are much easier than others. I think if you put the effort in, you can get to a decent communicative level (though not fluent) within 6 months.

If you immerse yourself in another country no doubt it will be quicker, and other Germanic languages will be easier, but I was going off the 10k words barometer to be fluent.

I used to hear people who went on construction jobs in the Netherlands who claimed to learn the language in 6 weeks an knew it was bollocks,
