Has it been a good/poor season?

A league cup win against Aston Villa a good season does not make.

Knew after Norwich away that the season was a write off. Forwards did the business but defensively (for many many reasons) we were a disaster.

could see it coming the second the team was announced.

Thats the major issue isn't it, EVERYBODY could see that midfield was a problem, it's bad enough when you perm any two from Gundog, Rodri and Silva but last night was just laughable

It's not been the best season, but if we we kinda know why.

Mendy being long term injured and then not hitting the ground running.
Not replacing Kompany, and then relying on Laporte to stay fit.
Laporte gets long term injured exposing the above.
Otamendi struggling without Kompany/Laporte directing him
Zinchenko has the passion we need, just not the skill/attention level
Sane being long term injured.
Bernardo Silva not the same player after the racism thing.
Only just realising that Cancelo is a different player on the left.
David Silva not the same player since his hair grew back. (had a good end to the season though)
Aguero continuing injuries
Fernandinho just about spent (but will rightly get hero/legend status when he goes)
Mahrez...
John Stones...

The good things are

Foden starting to really shine
De Bruyne maintaining a good level despite the overall team being down
Laporte back
Mendy starting to show signs of good form
Cancelo good on the left
Eddy is rock solid at the back
We are sorting the defence out
Sterling in good form (ok not from 5mm from goal!)
Bernardo will play himself back to form if his effort is anything to go by
Aguero will be back and hopefully a replacement not too far away

Fresh start...?

Khaldoon will have to set the tone in his review to make sure team, coaches, players will know that this season is not why they paid for...

Apart from our lawyers nobody did a good job at City this year.

Our record vs top7 teams in PL is utter gash this season, United loss home and away, Wolves loss home and away, Liverpool away loss, Chelsea away loss, Spurs away loss, Spurs home draw.
Vs these 5 teams thats 10 PL games, potential 30 points we got only 7 of it. Pep were found out in many of those games.

Liverpool pushed us all the way last season, we had to win last fucking round to clinch the title.
When Liverpool winning we did not have the belly to give them a fight 20 points behind, that is awful.

Than he had a 3 months covid break to come up with plans for FA Cup semi and we saw how we folded against Arsenal, who decided to sit back and do quick counters. Arteta his right hand man simply changed the way they played after we beat them 3-0 in PL after the restart. and it worked and won them FA Cup.

He did well to beat Real, that is our only great CL knockout result imo in 4 years of Pep, as before that we only beat Schalke and Basel with him.

But then this Lyon thing, this is embarrassing on the highest level, 7th of French league who scored 40 goals in their 30 games in league before it was cancelled...
I mean Juventus was so angry they lost to Lyon they fired Sarri before he was able to leave dressing room after the Lyon game and he delivered the title 2 weeks before that.

And add recruitment on all this, Danilo vs Cancelo, did it really improve us? Hardly.
Fernandinho repaced with Rodri in DM, did it really improve us?
If their plan worked we would have now a slow Maguire for 60m and large salaries bought last summer. Really Maguire would have been the answer to lack of speed in a high line? Did we dodged a bullet there actually? Look at Jorginho at Chelsea, is that another bullet dodged?

Make no mistake Txiki will keep spending 50-60m for players and then say loudly oh look at the records we dont break transfer records, but maybe we should bring in one 100m player who will make rival sit up and notice and make everyone in the team take notice as well instead of bringing 4 x 50-60m players who will be as good only as Rodri, Cancelo, Mendy, Stones etc...

Not a good season at all apart from the CAS decision, where he appointed some of the best lawyers to help. With mediocre lawyers it would not have happened, our player recruitment has to take notice.

And there is Pep, did he really made the team perform better than sum of its parts? did he got the best out of everyone?
Not at all and he has been found out way too many times, worry is some lesser clubs were able to do it with players who would not get close to Citys bench.

Slightly off topic....
If the rags win the europa cup have they had a better season than us ?
Definitely. They’ve seen improvement, finished higher than most (certainly me) expected, and if they win that it’s a trophy albeit not one you particularly want to be involved in.
We have regressed, failed to defend our title with any real intent and have lost far too many games to inferior opposition (and I include Lyon in that). The league cup doesn’t feel like a successful season at all.

Poor if we compare it to last season but then again where can you go after doing the domestic clean sweep?
This season we've underachieved in my opinion, the defense has let us down 100%, not replacing vinnie bit us on the arse big-time, players injured/out of form, the Norwich game early doors was a warning sign and we never recovered from that for me.
Any other year this season is acceptable but we have raised the bar so high now.

It shows how far we have come when second in the Premiership, beating Real Madrid twice and winning the league cup is classed as a bad season.

I was in the crowd of 8015 against Swindon in 1965.

Get a grip ffs!

Sterling needs to be fined a months wages for that miss btw.
