Has it ever been better than this?

the sheik Mansour years,....drink them in ,savour every moment , they may only last for the next 20 years

I perhaps looked at last night from a different perspective from most blues who were in the ground sat, as I was, among the united fans, next to my dad on his season ticket.

I know it's many supporters idea of hell, being in the opposition end, especially in a Derby, but I quite enjoy it. You've got to concentrate a great deal more, not only on the game, but also on not revealing yourself. Try not to smile at the songs coming from the City end too much ( I caught myself tapping my feet on more than one occasion to the Lamborghini song!), try and stay impassive when we score or when a City player gets fouled.

What being in that setting also does, however, is make you reflect a little more on matters, than if you're in the City end when you're getting swept along with all the collective energy and positivity of those around you.

Like others, I found the first quarter of an hour to be exilerating, intoxicating almost. The power and precision of our play was a thing of beauty. We never quite reached those heights in the rest of the course of the game, but I remember sometime in the second half, when we were two goals up and there was a passage of play which involved Silva and Yaya which united, once again, were completely unable to cope with, in terms of brain or brawn.

I remember reflecting on that move, looking at the united players completely incapable of dealing with it, looking at the City fans to my left, then at the look of punch-drunk disbelief of those sat around me and for a moment I thought back to all those Derbies in the 80's and 90's when we were completely overcome by a never-ending red tide and I reflected for a second on all the delight that those sat around me used to derive from mocking my football club and I thought to myself: it really doesn't get any better than this.

Am I alone in thinking it has been better than this? Winning the league was surely better?

The football we played last night was, at times, mesmeric. There was in interchange of passes on the corner of their box where I simply lost track of the ball, so fast was the passing and movement.

But, and I think it's important to say this, we have to go on and win the league. Otherwise, for me, it clearly can't be considered to be our greatest footballing era.

As I came out from the ground last night, my salient thoughts were:
They were utterly shite - I wouldn't have one of their players.
We have to win the league.
How quickly can I get back to The Albert.

27/4/1974

the sight of the pitch full of rags and in the middle was a large hole and in the centre was the sky blue shirt with a big number 4 on the back

Mick Doyle facing up a few hundred rags they were so pissed off but no one would go near Mick they just parted as he strolled leisurely off the pitch

now that's when you feel proud to be a blue probably a better day than the 6-1

I loved 74 and the 70s in general. My first Derby was the 4-1 at Old Trafford (Franny hat-trick) But this time is extra special because of the collapse by the rags. Their fans are totally stunned. The atmosphere last night before and after the match was the strangest I can remember. No hint of the usual violence from their bully boys. It was a sort of silence...like being at a funeral. I felt euphoric last night as I walked home..just like I did when we beat them in 74 when I was a teenager. The feeling you get from an away Derby win is still the best for me.

The singing was incredible at the Swamp, completely outsang the rags. Some really good chants as well, the Lamboghini was classic, and some great individual songs, but heard some new pretty funny ones from our end i havent heard before.

This one about Moyses being the Chosen One was pretty funny, and really riled the rags

Great post Gordon . Some of the football we played on Tuesday was stunning .

Of course I want us to win the league this season however just think about this, if we don't we will be challenging for it next season, and the season after that and far into the future.

We are as a club still a work in progress, I think that sometimes many of us lack patience and want far quicker results, but one day in the not to distant future we will dominate the Premier League and do very well in Europe.

It's been a fantastic few years for us, and who have thought after all the crap we have been through, we would be in the position we are in now, I mean challenging for another Title, it's unreal

No and this is only the beginning :)
Nail on head. In the past, teams having great spells were a player or two, who's careers end ,often sent clubs into decline. It happened to us. This time I feel more secure for the future. We are here to stay.
