Has the BBC become a Tory tool?

something that is pissing me off and explains another reason why the BBC is shedding listeners on the Radio is Nicky Sodding Campbell - 2hrs of his ego across 5Live, BBC2 and the BBC News Channel every morning. A consequence of merging News and World no doubt and a blatant attempt to emulate James O'Brien who's LBC show has gone from strength to strength. It maybe would work better with a different host and less wall to wall coverage but I suppose this is how cost cutting works
I always turn it off when it comes on. It just irritates me to death.

Aside from complaining about egos and offering up O'Brien as a contrast, Campbell was doing similar stuff on 5 live over 20 years ago so the 'blatant emulation' line is nonsense.
Besides that I don't see how the formats are comparable tbh.

Phone-ins and you can watch both live......? Yep not alike at all.

James O'Briens show began in 2004 - new kid on the block clearly.

Cuts encouraged by the Govt to the BBC have bitten and are biting deeper. Rajar listening figures this week show LBC Talk Radio etc piling on listening figures whereas BBC has haemorrhaged talent and listeners. BBC R2 lost much loved presenters to Greatest Hits Radio ( listening figures have benefitted ) and R2 is a shadow of its former self.

Just this week the BBC has decimated local radio - many many much loved local presenters have left and from 2pm weekdays there is no unique local programming - its all merged - same with weekends. They have also blocked some streaming options.

I referenced this a couple of years ago - we know someone who works at local BBC regional broadcasting and they have predicted all this as part of the Tory anti-BBC vendetta designed to rid us of the BBC and make it a small subscription only organisation. Staring with radio - particularly local radio which has taken years of investment of OUR money to develop which they will take away. Shame if you support Stockport or Sale Sharks for your coverage of local sports. I am told the top management are happy enough with this and the layer below are thrashing around trying to come up with something to emulate the growth of rivals.

Its a tried and tested ( they think ) methodology - bad mouth and institution - underfund it - run it down and persuade the population it would be best in private hands. However that is backfiring with health and rail - lets see how they get on eh?

Just wait for Murdoch and more of his billionaire friends to fill your local radio stations like they do in the US.

At that level sure but unless Campbell has recently started talking directly to the listeners for the bulk of the show offering up his personal opinions and only interacting with callers/guests one on one then no. Not a regular listener of either but to my ears the format of the 5live mid morning slot, multiple guests/callers sometimes talking over eachother, hasn't changed much in over 20 years. The idea that it is a blatant emulation of LBC is as ridiculous as offering up O'Brien as an ego free contrast to Campbell.

Never said he was tbf. Ironically his first broadcast gig came via one of those daytime TV studio audience debate shows alongside Jim Davidson. A tried and tested format previously fronted by among others Nicky Campbell!

Don't disagree with any of that .... just the example you used.
