Hats at football grounds...what happened?

hats/caps sort of started being phased out late 60's early 70's as guys grew their hair long al-la Jason King and didn't want it messed up. They make the occasional return - freezing here on the moors today and we are all wearing our woolly hats - at football they have always hung around in cap/bucket hat / woolly hat form. I have a big head though so hate wearing a hat as I look like the Mekon ( one for the youngsters to google there. )
