Hats at football grounds...what happened?

Both hats and caps fall within the category of headgear and headwear accessories. However, all hats have brims and shaped crowns, whereas a cap is less structured, and doesn't have a brim, but is never without a peak or visor
 
yeah, i totally agree that the beauty of English is that we add new words all the time. we traditionally even steal words from other languages.

i disagree though that we need to cast aside lovely olde English words whilst doing it.
(said whilst stamping my foot like a brat) why can't we keep them!?

do as you wish, but i'm sticking with rooves and that's that.
