Have we improved?

You're all dancing around on a pin-head here. It seems clear we're going to finish in a range of 8th - 12th, with a points tally almost certainly lower than last season. It matters not what anyone on here thinks about that, but whether our owners believe that to be an acceptable return on a 100 million pound investment!

I'm feeling really optimistic about the club and Hughes. I've always been in the keep him camp but there was a time when my faith wobbled.

We have to give the guy a chance to get everything sorted. His signings have been generally good and the squad is infinitely better than this time last year. It will always take time for a manager to fully turn the squad he inherits into his way of thinking. The poor results won't help him in that but when they do start going in our favour hopefully any doubters in the squad will come to his way of thinking. It is clear that the likes of Ireland have faith in the boss while it seems Elano has his doubts.

The rags followed up a 2nd place finish with an 11th place finish in Taggart's early days. They clearly didn't improve in the short term but we all know what happened. Clough took over at Leeds when they were reigning champions only to be sacked after 44 days. They weren't improving but Clough went on to win the European Cup twice with Forest. David Moyes took Everton to 4th then followed that up by finishing 11th. Again, short term they went backwards.

This club has a culture of sacking managers and showing very little faith in them. On occasions we have made bad appointments who have deserved to be sacked but at other times we have been rather hasty. It is hard for me because I didn't think Hughes was the right man for the job but we have to give him at least 2 seasons. The upheaval at the club is pretty well unprecedented. We've twice changed owner, sacked the manager and had many players come into the club. We have to let things settle down. Sack Hughes and we're back to square one with a new manager with new ideas coming to the hotseat.

We have the finances allowing us to continually sign players who will hopefully improve the squad. Everton don't have that so there is sadly a limit on what they can achieve. It's unlikely that they will be able to sign the players that will take them to the next level. We have to stick with Hughes, our home form is better than this time last season. Away games have been disappointing but I do believe that will change in time.

Over the last week with all the excitement around the Hamburg game it's been great being a blue and looking to the future. We need to maintain that positivity, it might rub off on the players. Let's get behind the team, we're on our way. Enjoy the ride lads.

" Those are stone cold facts. Play with them however you want, but they are true. "

I love it when somebody's opinion is expressed like this . Especially when it relates to performances when clearly that is a matter of opinion isn't it?

Are results and points a matter of opinion?

I`ve been saying we should keep hughes and give him a chance, although the way the team is performing im starting to question that idea tbh.
He`s bought some good players and spent a lot of money, i dont expect the finished product just yet, players have got to settle and become accustomed to each other and their different roles also a different tempo if they have been bought from abroad.
But when you look where we are in the league and who is round us (bolton, whu, wigan)teams who have had to sell their better players, it just makes me wonder is keeping hughes the right thing for the club, would we miss out on getting the top manager for the job, if we hang on well into the start of next season in the hope that hughes can get it right.
Apart from some of the substitutions, which baffle me at times, i cant understand why having spent all that money we didnt buy a big target man, which i think has been our biggest problem the fact we have nobody to win balls in the air in the oppositions half and to hold the ball up.imo

i was really frustrated by us not signing RSC in the window. obviously its still holding us back so i understand it's controversial, but blackburn had us over a barrel. 25m? when he's 17m TOPS in the summer? by not forking out we did at least do something to combat the idea that we are just a cash cow for the rest of football. let's face it, we've been a cash cow for anyone selling dodgy players for years... there was always the danger that the ADUG money would just mean we end up a better class of cattle. that goes for playing contracts too.... we have to be mean business in everything we do if we are gonna compete with the big boys.

And RSC has really set the premiership on fire this season ? And by signing Blackburns equivalent of Pablo Angel would have made such a differance

still need a big target man whether rsc or a.n.other, the fact we have no one up front to play in that role is a mistake
