He may be mad but he's one of us

Don't know if this has been mentioned already but Ballo's kick on Thursday was nothing like as bad as de Jong's in the world cup. Yet we are all 100% behind "our Nige".

Seems to me the outrage at Ballo's behaviour is not so much about the foul itself. It's more a reaction to his general "couldn't be arsed" attitude. If he wore his City heart on his sleeve just a tiny little bit - like de Jong does, week in, week out - he might find people supported him a bit more.

It's hard to support someone who gives the impression he doesn't give a toss whether he plays for us or not.

I know he let us down midweek, but I honestly think Bobby was wrong to hang him out to dry like he did. I don't think top managers should publicly criticise players. He was already public enemy no. 1 in the dressing room and I believe all criticism should have been kept there. Our hope is that now he has apologised, that incident will be a turning point with him and his attitude, and let's hope he gets on today, and does something positive for the club, he bloody owes us!!!!

Neither can be defended, quite simply because a foot doesn't need to be that high. For me both are red card offences, however the difference is that NDJ, (imo), genuinely went for a the ball but with a stupid challenge to do so. Balotelli went for the ball, also with a stupid way to do so but he also 'lost it' and decided the player needed a good old raking of the studs. In other words NDJ didn't go out to hurt someone, it was just a stupid thing to do, whereas Balotelli went out to hurt someone. As I say, both red card offences but with different intentions.

Interesting to note Redknapp on Goals on Sunday.

Merson: Constantly messed up training and was purposefully difficult. Absconded to Barbados instead of attending a rehab clinic in his 30s, after 10 years in the game.

Verdict: Proper good lad he was, funny geezer

Di Canio: Was never on time for training, often flaired up and caused riots within the team. Demanded to be subbed when he missed a sitter, was sent off for hitting a person in the face, was banned for pushing over a referee, staged an on the field protest at a referee decision causing him to be subbed, in his 30s after 15 years in the game.

Verdict: Club legend, "what a character", etc.

Balotelli: Doesn't smile as much as Ronaldinho, made a couple of bad tackles, used to moan at ref decisions at aged 20 after a couple of years in the game.

Verdict: Mentally deranged, needs to be shipped out, is a disgrace to the club.

The hypocrisy here is utterly astounding. Some of these fans need to take a look in the mirror and ask exactly what they are gaining by abusing a player like Balotelli. If their attitude to a young lad making a few mistakes is "well, he has brought the fire of 50,000 people on to himself", then I fear for them as parents or any sort of people managers.

we are SUPPORTERS of Manchester City. If you do not wish to support the club, the players, the staff then you might as well just fuck off.

Baliever.

I haven't seen him have one really great game for us yet. Some decent ones yes but none that have made me think that he is going to be the best player in the world.

He wont be here past next season and probably not past this if Mancini goes and mourinho comes in.

He owes Mancini because Mancini stuck his head on the block for him and it could ultimately lead to his own downfall!!

Well said Damocles. And may I add (for the benefit of the rag snipers lurking in the bushes), shrek; how about how shrek held a gun to his clubs head to force a massive pay hike [even telling the media that the reason he was leaving was because his team mates weren't up to it!], shagged prostitutes [horrible old one's] thereby dragging his reputation and ergo his clubs reputation through the shite [but giving his missus some comfort that he'll fancy her when she's 76]. And shreks had a crap season on the pitch, can hardly score any more and is resorting to violence against opposition players even off the ball!
Yet shreks still loved by the media?

Need to get a bit of perspective on this one and give Mario the support that the young fella needs.

Damo, you have been unyielding in your support for the guy which is applaudable in itself, but surely even you must be having some doubts right now? So you should understand some of the (albeit way over the top at times!) apathy towards Balo from people who dont share your total loyalty to the guy?

I am severely dissapointed myself in his behaviour in general and lasdt Thursday was the latest let down, but as long as he's a blue i will maintain my support but trust me..........he's (like Bobby lad if he continues to go out on a limb for the guy) in the 'last chance saloon' now....and thats why i would personally play him and just sit him down one-on-one with the following words in his 'shell like'......

"Go out there and prove them all wrong son, you know what you did, now go out there and start putting it right, by scoring setting us up for a huge win and put us on course for next seasons Champions League. Failure is not a option, for either of us any more, you have let the fans, me and yourself down and only you can put this right now. I'm giving you the the chance to do just that.....its in your hands now......you decide whether you want to be remembered as a legend or a spoilt brat total failure....its up to you son...so, get out there and fooking show em!!"

I understand the frustrations of people, because I often share them myself. However, making long and sweeping statements like "get rid ffs", I find short-termist and somewhat self defeating.

People who watched him at Inter, and those who compare him to his first couple of games can see a noticeable change in his attitude, both in his outbursts and how often he tracks back when playing on the wing. He IS getting there.

Also, I don't have any loyalty to the guy on a personal level; he's just another one of the lads as far as I am concerned and would get the same treatment as anyone. However, there are certain players who come along once or twice in a generation, where you can just see something in them. At 20, he has the ability to be a matchwinner, and his scoring record is better than most. I rate his ability, higher than I rate nearly everyone (obvious exceptions apart).

When you have a player who has this type of ability, sometimes you have to let them grow up in front of you. Every single top player apart from Messi has done these things that Balo has done, it's just part of the process of getting there. People management isn't a one size fits all category, and you have to adapt to each player. Mourinho once said that a football manager who is fair is a buffoon; all top managers have just worked out how to show the illusion of fairness. I tend to agree with that.

There was a player for Roma in the 80s called Falcao (if memory serves). He decided that he didn't want to train, ever, on the day before a match. He was a matchwinner for them regularly, so they didn't want to piss him off, as he felt it was better for his body; thus, everybody on the team trained other day before apart from Falcao. He still won them matches and scored goals.

Sir Bobby Robson wrote an excellent autobiography, and in it mentioned his time at PSV where he managed Romario. Romario would barely train, smoked large cigars and buggered off back to Brazil regularly. He also wouldn't pass much on the pitch. He still got his games however, because he banged them in.

There are numerous other examples around the world; Maradona always took a week extra holiday and was consistently 30 minutes late to training at Napoli, but he worked out fine.

You can also point to Ronaldo at United, Cassano at Madrid, Bellamy at Newcastle, Barton at City, etc, of players who just took a bit of time to grow up. It happens sometimes in such an intensely public trade, and we as fans have an important part to play in how it ends. We can boo him, and we've wasted near £30m or we can show him some love and watch hiim grow in front of us.

The day Balotelli signed, I said that neither his performances nor his pricetag will determine the success of his time here. The reaction of the fans to his growing pains, is the sole determinant. He will bang them in, and grow into a giant of a player wherever he is, I would just prefer that to be here than elsewhere.

He's daft, he's immature and he's reckless at times. We all were at his age, even Mr Professional Ryan Giggs had his troubles back then. He is a testament to how much a player can evolve in the spotlight, and Balo COULD do this.

Special Italian players generally are twats until they grow up a bit. Our own Bobby Manc was a fucking dick until he was about Balo's age when he decided to grow up a bit. Cassano, Totti and the others, I won't mention!

The point is, Balotelli is a long term project who has short term positives (goals) and negatives (discipline). As he continues on here, his discipline will calm down, like it does for all players., and the positives will only grow stronger.

When you have as many positives as him, he's worth the risk. Mourinho himself said that he only trains at 50%, if he ever decided to train at 75%, he'd be the best player in the world!

We cannot throw that type of talent away because of a few small incidents, we need to look at the bigger picture here
