Plays a big part in the working environment in our country today.I know it is enforced in our place like nowhere i have ever worked before.i was just curious to hear from you lot,on if it has an affect on your job,and how stringent your employer us when it comes to health and safety.

The reasons employers are so stringent is as a result of the various pieces of legislation that govern them as employers.

Employers are just trying to cover their backs against the litigious nature of society!

My thoughts exactly.I work for a food packaging company, and we we're recently taken over by a company that has taken this to a new level. Our forklifts are now fitted with a small device that registers every impact made by the truck.Last night someone had a slight accident, noting major and no damage caused, the impact was measured and an e mail sent via the device to our manager who was at home in bed,he then e mailed our foreman at 10 past three in the Morning asking what had happened lol

I look after the Health & Safety where I work, and I have to keep telling people not to walk round the office barefoot for H&S reasons, but they just think you are being fussy.

It is minging though, why would you take your shoes off at work?!!

tell you what softlad, and anyone else who thinks we're in a litigious society, when you or one of yours has a bad accident at work, you'll soon be going thru the 'no win no fee' ads - and so you should.
h&s legislation is there for very good reasons. if employers are OTT with it, good for them. and good for the lawyers (like me just so you know i may be a bit biased) who stick it to the cowboy employers who don't give a fuck.

Not neccessarily.

I run the installation department of a company that works with high pressure gas cylinders (200-300 Bar), and the reason that I am stringent on H&S is because I don't want to get a phone call one day telling me that one of my engineers or a member of the public is badly injured or dead as a result of our works.

Litigation doesn't come into it, if we are careful and thorough with the procedures we have in place to prevent accidents then we (should) avoid ever being exposed to legal action in the first place.
