My old man was brought up on a Ground Floor Flat on Leith Walk. Same block as the Chibese Supermarket & Harp & Castle pub. Due to some family disputes over the years and people not talking no-one realised that my grandad was in a care home in Ferrylee.
Thankfully the family reconciled, and we basically found out that for a while my Papa was sleeping rough etc, & that squatters had taken up residence of the flat. A guy had very crudely split it in 2 and was renting it out to students making a pretty penny for doing so.
After a bit of a legal battle, the family got that flat back and immediately put it on the market. This was early 00's. It needed a full refurb, probably including joists the lot. Went on the market at offers over £89k and went for £160k in the end. I couldn't believe it. That was twice what my ex council semi detatched was worth at the time.
