Help please re a laptop

No it just won’t retain its charge. I had it plugged in to the mains and it was fine for 2 days charged up to 100% (foolishly I only checked on the first two days back) then on the 5th day it suddenly closed down even though it was plugged in. No warning of anything.

They took the laptop and the adapter plug.

Was it definitely not holding charge? Shutting down while plugged in (presuming the charger is fine) would more suggest a faulty component such as a RAM stick or possibly overheating from a poorly connected CPU heatsink.

In fact the charger is looking more & more the culprit perhaps, especially if it wasn't charging at all.
