Richers are brilliant for a first-time hi-fi buyer, and even for a first-time upgrader as long as you're happy to pick the best of what's on offer, but if you're starting at the £1000 mark you're better of taking your time and looking elsewhere.
Doug Brady Hifi in Warrington (if he's not retired yet) are very very good and have a lot of stuff that Richers can't get cheap enough to make a big profit on. There are plenty of independent hifi shops although I've not looked for 10 years as I spent £1400 on my hifi and I can't justify ever spending more than that again, especially now that CD is a dying format.
There's a Wired article on Good Enough Tech which goes some way to explaining why most people shouldn't bother with separates. That doesn't mean you shouldn't bother, but it does mean you should carefully consider whether it's worth spending a lot of money on them.
Personally, I'd trawl eBay for good second hand bargains. Keep your wits and you'll get a stunning amp and CD player and speakers for £300. I picked up a Musical Fidelity Elektra E600 CD player for £150 from Practical Hifi. It retailed for £600 a few years earlier. Awesome. Just wish I'd had another £700 to buy those Tannoy floorstanders they had in the demo room.
Oh, and if your room isn't large enough for floorstanders, I simply wouldn't bother. I've put mine in storage til we move out of the flat, I'm using a reasonably good set of Onkyos with a Cambridge 6.1 amp and a subwoofer for the time being, they do sound a bit rubbish really, but they do the trick.

Oh, and the shop opposite Super-Fi in Manchester is the best. Their staff are brilliant, and won't let you spend a fortune on something if they know they have a cheaper model elsewhere that will do the same job for you. I didn't get that kind of service from Super-Fi.
Practical Hi-Fi, and you're right, they also get some really good value second hand stuff. +1 from me
