Big fan of these tracks, I'm quite lazy with music, I won't listen to something unless something is put in front of me, should change that mind, I'll be missing out on awesome stuff. But yeah, these tracks, especially Nocturnal Rainbows are pretty good.

Rakim over KRS easy. BDP was great but dude seems a bit delusional since.

Although Eminem's content sucks, I think based on technical ability and skill he'd belong in any GOAT discussion .

Nas should win whatever this competition is. Did live at the BBQ when he was like 15 , illmatic when he was 18

Plenty of new shit out that's good .

Also, someone earlier said redman and ODB were close. I disagree . Redman is a top 5 MC , ODB was his era's flava flav. There's nothing they're close in ever.

I'm not sure if this is just for individuals but a lot of groups should be involved.. Tribe, de la soul , EPMD , 8ball and MJG, Geto Boys(or just face), CNN, mobb deep

My top 5:

1. Nas
2. ll cool j
3. Spice 1
4. Redman
5. Cam'ron

I feel like the people that enter conversations like this and in real life are the people that think they can relate to Morrissey writing songs about boy trouble.

MC Lyte's "Hard Copy" was one of the best posse cuts I've heard!

"Ruffneck" made all the rude boys nod their heads in 'pride'!!

Fair dos man, any reasons you would like to highlight?
He sounds like he's trying too hard to be Eminem who's average most of the time. And what's with those stupid eye lenses?

Also I've always thought Canibus was a fantastic lyricist.

Might not reckon on many peoples radars against some of the greatest but I like him.

I've always loved those lines from Funk Master Flex Vol.3 over Raekeon's "Ice Cream":
"For all you niggaz sayin that my shit is sick,
just imagine the ninety percent of my brain that I ain't even used yet
Take a deep breath, quick, suck in as much air as my lungs will permit --
then I start to kick that shit
I been gettin busy before the planets started to turn
Before the bees, the birds, and Adam and Eve occured
Prior to all creation, in other words
When the female egg will merge with the man's sperm
I stand firm, my words burn through your exterior
The eat away at your materia, I'm superior
While you only pretend to be, I can double my density
from three-sixty degrees to seven-twenty instantly
Six, multiplied by five by four by three by two
then one, go head and calculate the sum
The time has cometh, I was summoned to punish
Motherfuckers with mouths to run it ? with rubbish
When I come through, niggaz stand stiller than statues
Cause if I have to, I'll battle your whole rap crew
Then I'll attack you with words that's absurd
and rip your fuckin skin off just to get on your nerves"

Love that last line. Genius!
Ive always liked canibus, infact i have all his albums. Problem with him is hes a battle mc thats his roots and hes one of those mcs that is not able to write rhymes as a track that are appealing to anyone other than a battle rap fan.
Theres something on the net where apparently he ruins himself in a battle rap...not seen it myself though.

Some good shouts here. Rakim is defo one of the all time G.O.A.Ts and KRS has done tonnes for hip hop but he turned too political for me, some of his later albums i found hard to listen to because as he likes to call himself the teacher preacher, it felt like a chore.
Not sure if hes been mentioned but The D.O.C's album No One Can Do It Better is one of the best ever. Not forgetting Main Source's album Breaking Atoms. If you're a hip hop fan than both of those are a must. Also Scarface is up there, the hand of the dead body is amazing and powerful at the same time.

Excellent thread! Finally a contest without Manc contestants.

Clean the thread up and pm battle suggestions to OP, PLEASE.

Best MC? KRS ONE
BETTER LYRICIST? RAKIM

Manhattan keeps on makin it,
Brooklyn keeps on takin it,
The Bronx keeps creatin it,
And Queens keeps on fakin it.

Interesting.

I was going to make a similar point.

The choice of 'best rapper' isn't really a fair definition. Too many variables; party rap, social rap, ego rap, political rap, gangster rap, nonsense rap. That's just the main stuff.

You take away what relates to you. Dead heat between Chuck D and K.R.S.O.N.E. for political sound bites, imo.

Redman and Ol' Dirty are close, followed by Busta for pure bullsh*tting!

OG rappers? Kool G, Just Ice, Schoolly D, Tim Dawg, take your fookin pick!

Just Ice (with Mantronix producing)
"Cold Gettin' Dumb"

"F*%k Compton"

Ego? EARLY L.L. was probably untouchable. "I'm Bad" is one of the best ever offerings.

Straight rap about nothing? Lords of the Underground were ace at it!

"Chief Rocka"

It's like spot that artists in that vid!

Posse cuts? "Money in Da Bank" off Kool G Rap's album is up there with anything.

"Money in da Bank"

Loads of classics out there for different reasons.

You have to match real versus properly.
Dont forget dead prez, about as political as you can get!
Shame tim dawg was a one hit wonder, if you get a hold of some of his other stuff it was pretty good.

Tim Dog featured on this one.

Tim Dog was recently busted by Dateline NBC for scamming middle aged women.

He wasn't really any good and without the Ultra connection wouldn't have gotten anywhere. In my opinion.

If it wasn't for these two bands, I wouldn't have delved further into Hip Hop.

He was decent, not a lyrical talent as such but his diss on compton had a lot of truth behind it. I heard him on a track entitles 'timbs' or summit which was good.

On the topic of main source, Large professor along with premo is one of my all time fave beat producers. Also a shout to pete rock.

I had his 2 albums but never liked him, Fuck Compton was great obviously but aside from that he had nothing to say and couldn't say it well. For me.

Agreed re Extra P, I prefer him to Premier to be honest. Pete Rock might be my favourite producer although I've always leaned towards Showbiz/Diamond/Buckwild as that's the sound I like best these days.
