That's right, he took a nation that was on it's knees and made it into a major power again; in due course taking it into a war in which five and a half million of its soldiers were killed and upto two million of its own CIVILIANS were killed. It's economy was back to where it started, many of its major towns and cities were destroyed by battles or bombing campaigns, once he'd finished restoring it to major power status in 1945 it was split into three zones and shared by the victors, ending up in a terminal split in half in which the 'lucky' survivors from this once again major power were left to see out their days under the rule of Stalin.

Hitler had elements of genius, no doubt.

The conditions in which his rise to power occurred were unique and he exploited them fantastically.

But his power was all about defeating enemies and his grand scheme was both honest and reprehensible in its' blatant racism and vile methods.

World War II was ultimately lost by Germany more than it was won by the allies. Hitler and his generals made massive mistakes - his genius was limited but it seems he didn't know that.

A great orator and a consumate politician, but a failure as a miliatry leader.


As a human being? More than his fair share of evil I would say. But history is written by the winners and Hitler lost. That should be his epitaph:
