Holidays in America?

Definitely not, you're advised not to make small talk or be flippant with police and security so I keep chat to the minimum. The arse hole at Vegas was the worse one but none of the others were friendly, just doing their job I suppose but had better experiences elsewhere especially the Far East and Eastern Europe.

There’s loads of anecdotes on the internet about the severe attitude of US immigration officers towards visitors.
They're usually quite taciturn and one made me put all of the 4 packs of 6 Mr Kipling Cherry Bakewells I'd bought for my son through the scanner. But we got a really chatty one at JFK one time who we had a real good laugh with. The problem was we were tight for time for our connecting flight but we just made it in time.

I’m partial to a Cherry Bakewell myself, as a treat with a nice brew, lovely.

Been a few times mix of business with some leisure, mainly Charlotte area, Chicago, Pleasanton CA, Philly and San Francisco. Pretty well everyone I met was warm, friendly and welcoming - apart from the patrons of the Union Jack “English Pub” in Pleasanton - we didn’t know it was a biker/gang hangout. Awkward.
But in each place, the airport and immigration officials were obnoxious, rude and aggressive. Fuck knows why. But I’d still happily visit again.

1989 my father who was working in Dubai sponsored me and 4 friends to do an American road trip for a month. Landed in LA. Spent about 4 days and hated it. We then relocated to San Diego for a week. Then travelled across the desert to Vegas.
However, being young and daft we didn't pre book a hotel and arrived on a Friday night. A tourist information center got all 5 of us into the last available room but there was only 1 double bed.
So we devised a rota system and 1 of us slept in the cupboard. I was therefore wondering round Vegas casinos at 3am when I came across a boxing ring. 1 of the security guards told me it was Roberto Durans training camp for a fight he was due to have with Sugar Ray Leonard. If I came back at 6am I could watch him sparring. So I did but Roberto never did show up and 1 of hid entourage told me that he wouldn't be showing up as he'd been on the beer the night before. All that and I had missed my turn in the bed.
From Vegas we travelled up to San Francisco where we spent the rest of the holiday. I would say San Francisco is my favourite city of all the places I have ever been.
Great times

As a yank I can say I would be a trifle worried as a non-white person with a funny name from a dodgy country at immigration, but otherwise things here for tourists are fine. Plus the dollar is down the tubes. I can understand the boycotts (especially by Canadians) — your money; spend it as you like. I’ve visited 47 states and each of the largest 50 metros by population save two (Cincinnati and Norfolk/Virginia Beach) so feel free to ask. IMO most underrated city is Pittsburgh, and most overrated is Orlando.
Pittsburgh is simply fantastic. People who've never been think it's the US equivalent of somewhere like Middlesbrough but there's no steel mills anymore so no permanent smoke or smog and there's a great food and drink scene and plenty to do.

Been a few times. Heading there again in October, 10 days in LA, driving to vegas and staying for 2 days then got 5 days in Boston/Salem for Halloween. Gonna head to NYC for a day whilst there as it’s only an hour flight and I do like NYC.

Can’t wait.
Been to Salem a few times at Halloween. Great time but the crowds are huge. Loads of people walking around in all sorts of costumes. If you want a good pub; try O' Neills right in the square. Some of the best Guinness that I have had over here; plus the owner is an old friend and neighbour of mine. Food's good too. Enjoy!

Down the coast road to Huntington beach and turn left just after.

Cheers pal. I know it’s tourist hell (myself included) but only plan on going once in my life and if you going there it might was we’ll be at Halloween.

Really want to try Halloween in New Orleans at some point but suspect that even more crazy than Salem.

Got pulled over of Chips once. He was a right twat.

It’s beautiful especially in the fall and spring. Arguably the best sports town in America if you don’t care about basketball. Great universities. Super friendly people. And incredibly cheap relative to most major metros, especially housing.

New Orleans is at it's maddest around Fat Tuesday. Not sure what it's like at Halloween. Boy is it a fun city to visit though...
