How does that work then they setting up road blocks?

Gates were installed at the two entry points to the lagoon during peak periods this year in an attempt to ease the throng heading towards St Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge. If numbers get too high, the gates are closed and access is allowed only to those with hotel bookings or holding a Venezia Unica pass, a card that is mainly used by residents but can be bought for €40 by anyone.

Not been?

If it stops the twats on cruise liners I’m all for it.
Go and stay in Venice and you don’t pay it because you are already paying the tourist tax.

We have gone once a year since 2010, apart from covid lockdown.
We go out of season, autumn or late winter. It’s best then. Don’t believe the hype. You can get very reasonable accommodation and eating out is not ridiculously expensive as long as you avoid to tourist traps.
We were there in September last and will be there for our wedding anniversary at the Carnival in February.
We love the place.
It is definitely sinking though. About 3cm a year so don’t hang about if you want to go!

Just had a fabulous week in Whitby . Stayed in a cottage on east cliff in the grounds of Whitby Abbey. Unbelievable views and a fantastic brewery just around the corner . Absolutely arctic though but sort of added to the Christmas feel .
Stunning.

Last few days at work before flying to Ljubljana next Thursday for 2 nights at Lake Bled, and then from there heading to Bali for 15 nights to include Xmas day and New Year.

Flights were half the price to start in Slovenia than from the UK, so a great opportunity to see Bled which has been on the travel list for many years (plus a night in central Ljubljana on the return)
