There are those who frequently call for the youngsters to be given more opportunities. People rightly mention the successful youth set up under people like Jim Cassell and those who graduated to the first team via this route.

But who, if anyone, of those produced in days gone by would get a regular start in our current team, I have to say, I struggle to think of many, if any. David White, Ian Brightwell, Paul lake, all real talents without doubt, but would they really be good enough today?

Barney Daniels at a jpush but Phil Henson would walk in

Barney was brilliant playing in knee deep mud just a shame when the pitches dried out he couldn't get a kick.

Re the OP....White would be a player at a low to mid Prem Club as would Redmond and Hincliffe. Brightwell would be a Championship player. I think Lakey would have been sold at the time and gone onto be an England regular.

In today's time Lake would be in our current squad and him alone.

you can't really compare players twenty odd years ago to now. complete different fitness, training. If they were playing now then who knows ??

of young players recently definilty micheal Johnson and sturridge. At a push i would say keiron Trippier would be good for us now

Clive Wilson was one of my favourite players in the 80s . Its a shame we sold him because he played well for all the London clubs .

a player i always rated as a youngster but never realised his potential was Derek Jeffries a young centre half who came through the youth system and a local lad , his style of play would be more suited to the modern game , a cultured footballer who was good on the ball , he ended up with big mal at palace , but his career just drifted into the lower divisons and non league.
