Without the actual economic facts, and just guessing, Covid has had a greater economic impact on the UK than leaving the EU has.

The war in Ukraine, energy price increases affecting the EU as well as the UK, and the general increases in living and fuel prices are having a greater impact across the the EU and the UK then Brexit ever has.

PS. Having just come back from Munich the supermarket shelves are fuller.

Complete bollocks. There was no way anyone could predict what would actually happen. Yes. there were forecasts and what ifs. However, the fact is that the country is now worse off than if it had stayed and will continue to be so in the medium term. Who knows what will happen in the long term, but there is one thing for sure and that is it's going to take decades to get back to even where we were in 2016. But at least we get to queue to get in and out of the UK with our new shiny passports.

From OBR that formulate the governments financial forecasts.

Comparing our recent overall trade performance with other advanced economies suggests that the UK saw a similar collapse in exports as other countries at the start of the pandemic but has since missed out on much of the recovery in global trade.d UK and aggregate advanced economy goods export volumes fell by around 20 per cent during the initial wave of the pandemic in 2020. But by the fourth quarter of 2021 total advanced economy trade volumes had rebounded to 3 per cent above their pre-pandemic levels while UK exports remain around 12 per cent below (Chart I, left panel). The UK therefore appears to have become a less trade intensive economy, with trade as a share of GDP falling 12 per cent since 2019, two and a half times more than in any other G7 country (Chart I, right panel).

While additional trade with other counties could offset some of the decline in trade with the EU, none of the agreements concluded to date are of a sufficient scale to have a material impact on our forecast. The Government’s own estimate of the economic impact of the free-trade agreement with Australia, the first to be concluded with a country that does not have a similar arrangement with the EU,e is that it would raise total UK exports by 0.4 per cent, imports by 0.4 per cent and the level of GDP by only 0.1 per cent over 15 years.f

In summary, there is little in the data since the TCA was implemented to suggest the assumption of a 15 per cent reduction in trade intensity as a result of Brexit is no longer a central estimate. But these effects are likely to take several years to be fully realised, so with only just over a year having passed since the end of the transition period, and given the difficulty abstracting from the impact of the pandemic, we will continue to keep this assumption under review.

A 15% reduction in trade might not be Armageddon but it will adversely impact many many businesses and individuals. The impacts run into many £bns

As others have already eloquently pointed out, whatever the predictions Brexit has had an adverse effect on the wealth of this country and now we are seeing the real agenda behind it as the ERG rip up legislation safeguarding the people. Make no mistake we are currently in the midst of an authoritarian libertarian takeover of the country.

I have little doubt that the Tories will be ousted at the next election (people aren't stupid enough to re-elect them, are they?) But the damage done in the meantime will be huge and long lasting.

All because you and others weren't smart enough to see the writing on the wall and even now you tout their slogan 'Project Fear' !

No chance of that. Until people look themselves in the mirror and admit they got it wrong, the country won't move on. They've even got rid of the Brexit Opportunities minister because they know there aren't any.

I idiotically thought at the time of the vote that when the chickens came home to roost the government would backtrack on the most damaging aspects of Brexit because at heart they supported the best interests of the nation. What a fool I was - they're doubling down and completely screwing the future of the country for personal gain. Never in our history have we had a government that deliberately wants to shaft the majority of the population, but here we are.
