It's largely a matter of pride now.
Our being outside the EU does not work. It cannot be made to work.
Ergo we must either:
1. Move towards a closer relationship, leading at some future point to rejoining.
or
2. Accept long-term and continual decline. Which has all manner of real-world consequences, some of which are already becoming apparent, and others which will emerge as the continuing decline in our economy (in relative terms at least) leads to further damage to public services and/or higher taxation. Probably both, meaning you will pay more and more for less and less.
Sooner or later we need to swallow our pride. It was an error. Fact. End of story. And we cannot have what we lost, that is gone forever. We shall have to accept something different, that won't be as good but which will be better than the alternative.
Pissing about for 15 years on the basis of some deranged principle amounts to deliberate self-harm.
