How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

It's largely a matter of pride now.
Our being outside the EU does not work. It cannot be made to work.
Ergo we must either:
1. Move towards a closer relationship, leading at some future point to rejoining.
or
2. Accept long-term and continual decline. Which has all manner of real-world consequences, some of which are already becoming apparent, and others which will emerge as the continuing decline in our economy (in relative terms at least) leads to further damage to public services and/or higher taxation. Probably both, meaning you will pay more and more for less and less.
Sooner or later we need to swallow our pride. It was an error. Fact. End of story. And we cannot have what we lost, that is gone forever. We shall have to accept something different, that won't be as good but which will be better than the alternative.
Pissing about for 15 years on the basis of some deranged principle amounts to deliberate self-harm.

I bet there's a band on the circuit called 'Pork Markets' (they won't, of course, be touring Europe).

Tories wont accept it tho ... cos they don't like forriners.

Because many wanted access to the single market, but not be part of the customs union. We want to trade with our closest partners but also with others around the world. If we want access from this point going forward we must accept all EU laws anyway, must adopt the single currency, adopt Schengen, adopt the Eurozone, adopt the EU's debt repayments, become a full member. That is a much, much harder sell.

Being a member of the EFTA would grant us access to the single market, eradicate the Northern Ireland protocal and all its issues yet allow us the freedom to forge trade partnerships separate from Europe. Right now would you take EFTA membership over nothing at all? It baffles me that those who profess to love Europe aren't even willing to support or entertain the notion, dismiss it as folly, yet believe the country would be fully behind adopting the Euro and full membership instead. The EFTA answer has always been there, even recommended to us, yet it doesn't gain support from those who want exactly what it would provide.
Would it mean we were in a free trade zone from Iceland to the Russian border? That's what Leave promised.

PORK MARKETS !!!

That's if we have any pigs to export. My nephew was a stockman on a pig farm, but gave it up (living in a damp caravan) to set up as a gardener. In the winter he's been doing a day a week covering for his successor on the same pig farm - but the owner's giving it up. The lack of EU vets has killed off much of the industry.

Meanwhile, his brother works for an agricultural equipment firm that exports all round the world. I'd have to check but he said they were having to open a depot in the EU to get round (or minimise) the red tape.

Presumably we have given the Koreans some sort of kick back.

Why the fuck do they need pork from around the world when the largest producer of pork is almost next door?

It's the new thread title: "This isn't the Brexit I voted for".
