How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

I suppose we now have to confront two uncomfortable truths. Firstly the fact that brexit has critically damaged our economy. Secondly, EU membership allowed us to prop up that same economy through modern day slavery by mobilising cheap eastern European labour for us to either enrich ourselves or pay below (what should have been) the going rate for labour and services

It’s also an industry where bright, young working class people can progress relatively quickly into junior and senior management. And put their talents to best use.

Not many of those left.
I find that if a career is rewarding people will do it. I also find being a manager or supervisor in certain industries can mean long hours and only a couple of quid above min wage of those they are managing.

The virus and lockdown shone a light on the importance of certain roles to maintain the basics for all our society. How quickly some forget.

Embrace retail social care nhs transport charity workers and many others. And if the middle classes have to cough up a couple of quid extra so be it.

A costa Latte really isn't worth that much more than a nescafe with a lot of warm milk.

So, anybody still think Brexit’s a winner?

If by "healing" you mean nobody does, then we're all on the same side / in the same boat / up a creek without a paddle / seeing the benefit in 50 years / not bothered about labour shortages further wrecking the economy / so long as British fish are happy.

Is that about right?
How are you suffering Vic? What heirlooms have you had to burn to keep the old manor warm. Maybe bad luck as befallen some like others when we were in the EU.

I must be uniquely shielded I work with 80 odd other people. I have family friends and people I randomly bump into. Literally hundreds of people. The number who have told me brexit has destroyed their life? Non zip nada fuck all.

Ukraine or covid that's different but some hardly spend any time on those actual life changing events. No they pile in on the oh shit we lost a vote 7 yrs ago one.

And people call the loons in the match day thread.

This is key.. a big price. It's a tricky one though -
As a descendant of an economic migrant myself I'm part of the picture.
I benefitted hugely (and am immensely grateful for) my education in this country which set me up in life. But of course I want the same opportunities for my kids and so on, along with my siblings etc, so we would need more migration to fill that gap whilst infinitely growing the population. I don't think that's sustainable.

I can see the issue.. there's enough money going around, but it's not being split appropriately. Being part of the EU exacerbated this, now we're being forced to confront it. I can't see anyone willing to commit political suicide and address it.

You are correct there is enough for everyone but people will not voluntary give up a bit. They are also dishonest in admitting it.

Cheap EU labour. Cheap Chinese products. Nike shoes made in Asia. Cheap clothes made in foreign sweatshops.

Welcome to the modern world.

And if Brits won't do the menial jobs at the new going rate, we are impoverished as a nation. And still no-one to serve us in Pret.

Absolutely, I'm sure most of my own clothes and electrical goods are of dubious provence so I'm not taking any moral high ground here.

If it was modern day slavery why would they come and go as they please?

In topsy-turvy Tory world, empathy must come under Braverman's "fake garb of humanitarianism" [(c) Hitler].

(The source site stopped trying to attribute job losses purely to Brexit when Covid came. These were Brexit job losses before we even left the EU.)
