How good was the Hacienda?

I think it said about £18 million went through the books during its time with virtually no or little profit!
The “door staff” were letting their mates in for free (most were selling drugs) and the punters were buying drugs off the dealers and drinking water not booze. There was little takings each night despite being packed.
And then each week the boss of the door staff was expecting his “fee” too.

DN?

I might be classed as a miserable old git but Imo it wasn't that great.
Too bright for my liking as I like night clubs to be dark and seedy lol.
I also didn't appreciate drinking beer out of cans and through a straw.

I went there a few times but give me Rotters or Pips any any day of the week.

I never went in but in the summer of 1991 a load of us planned to one evening. We were drinking over the road outside the City Road Inn beforehand. We liked the rave music but at that point none of us were truly into the scene itself - that would come later. I think only one of the lads took anything that night. He popped an E and we headed over in pockets of twos and threes. All of us got the dreaded “Sorry lads, not tonight”. Me and a mate didn’t hang around and fucked off to The Venue. We should’ve stayed as it turned out that the rest got lucky because they spotted one of the doormen who they knew from school and he ended up letting them in. I didn’t get much feedback from them about how good or bad the night was but going off some of the other comments on here, the place was on a down slope by then.

It was a few months later that some of us truly got into the rave scene. Millionaires, The Limit, Wigan Pier, Bowlers, Shelleys, Longton Leisure Bowl. Most of them great nights but I have to say Millionaires was my favourite. That was my first all nighter and me and my mate only ended up going to give some moral support to another mate who didn’t want to go on his own. He was popping pills that night while we were still clean and drinking beer. But by about 3am we were struggling to stay awake and ended up caving in and getting hold of some speed. And that was the start of it. It only really lasted about 12 months or so for me and it was far from every week but it was a right blast. The tunes back then were so much better than they are today. We were on holiday in Palma Nova earlier this year and we basically took over the DJ set in one Magaluf bar on our first night (helped by the fact that we were pretty much the only ones in there ha ha), getting him to play almost every banger from the 88-92 era.

I went there once with my girlfriend. I wasn't bothered but she wanted to go.

Maybe it was after its prime, it would have been around 1992 ish, but there wasn't anything special about it.

It was just a club playing music with a small bar somewhere downstairs if I remember correctly.

We left and never went back.

Don’t think those plastic gangsters had anything to do with the Hacienda. It was the Gooch, Cheetham Hill and Salford lot involved in the door wars. Happy to be corrected of course but Lattlay Fottfoy certainly wasn’t involved
They took it on MES, in the early 90's. I did not get to go till 95 and they had the door then.
