How good were Pink Floyd?

Mad fucker

Yeah he seems to be, as I said in the other thread him calling Biden a war criminal (and not Putin) is a bit crazy imo.
Of course he is entitled to his opinion.

Pink Floyd were awesome.

Watters is a fucking egotistic ****, who has an over-inflated opinion of his talent. It's too bad that Rogers left Floyd - as I think that the band could have had much more success had he stayed on.
As a band they certainly were awesome....but Waters was absolutely THE song writing talent within the band. When he left the certainly went down hill....but strangely, on his own he was nothing compared to Floyd

Weaker as a group maybe but a juggernaut sales wise its a no contest, the Pros and Cons probably seen as Waters finest solo work although I prefer Amused to Death sold just under 600,000 where as the division bell did 12,000,000

Even Floyds last little scrape the archives album did 2,500.000 so the question to be asked if Roger was so fucking good in his own mind why didn't he carry those Floyd fans with him?

I've played pink Floyd for hours on end over the years and i agree with you that they were awesome. But when Waters left after Final Cut album Floyd went down hill fast without Roger's influence, IMO. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason I played it plenty but couldn't get into it. Division Bell was ok i suppose but I've hardly listened to it.

I like Waters angst he gave Floyd which is still there in much of his solo stuff. I think Gilmour is a fantastic guitarist and for me his finest moment in Floyd was Wish You Were Here album.

I have most solo albums of Waters and Gilmour and their style is like chalk and cheese. I've played Waters solo albums a lot but I just can't get into gilmour solo stuff. I think its too trippy and wishy washy, I'm not saying its crap though, each to their own.

Roger Waters is a much bigger artist than a lot of people think. He sold out Wembley stadium 2 nights on the trot a few years ago. I attended one gig there and it was absolutely jam-packed. He sells out big gigs all over the world for a reason.

The post Waters Floyd albums are to me Floyd by numbers but they did one or two decent things. Of course Gilmour didn't retire the name cos they wouldn't have sold so many albums and tickets. Waters solo albums are average. He left Floyd cos he knew he'd peaked , which the solo albums prove. A brave and honourable thing to do.

Spot on that. Waters is the alchemist that Gilmour could never be.

I think the 2 post waters albums are total dogshit, Gilmour had a bunch of writers help but couldn't write anything as deep, angst ridden and sardonic (or as lasting) as Waters could. I saw those 2 albums as a last big cash in before retiring the name.
The Final Cut was pretty shit too, Roger solo really. (although I do love The Gunners Dream).

In the end they needed each other to produce classic albums.

Thats because the sound of Pink Floyd were first Gilmore's guitar playing, and secondly the vocal harmony of Gilmore and Wright. Obviously Waters does sing on some songs but the Floyd sound can't be replicated by Waters in his solo career. But I agree the song writing talent and more importantly the lyric writing talent was Waters.

This song sums up all of the above imo, classic classic Pink Floyd from 1971 and the reason I fell in love with them:
