How good were Pink Floyd?

I guess you could say "More than the sum of their parts." Roger was an amazing conceptualist. Gilmour was the only real virtuoso. Syd''s childlike pop ditties and psychedelic tendencies carried them far until the others could pick up the slack. They kind of learned what the Beatles did.... stay in the studio long enough with talented producers and something good will happen.

Never did it for me. Still don't. I found them as I did most rock bands of the 70's self indulgent twats. I was young but knew I hated the same old shute. The same riffs same lead solos and lyrics to make you puke.

Most of my mates now like them. But, when did I ever listen to them?

Not for me.

Liked the wall as a primary kid. We used to sing it in the playground then be mercilessly beaten with the belt.

Well, it was the good old days. :)
I am glad they upset you.

Only concert I ever fell asleep at was Pink Floyd on their 'wish you were here' tour. Something about the dry ice and the prolonged intro to one of their songs and I was in land of nod (nothing to do with the booze consumed beforehand). I listen to a couple of their albums occasionally as the wife does like them, but nothing approaching my ongoing love for Yes, Gabriel Genesis and one or two other prog bands. Having said all of that have seen Australian Pink Floyd a couple of times in the last three years and thats a good night out. They are very good musicians and if anything I prefer their live slightly more direct and gritty sound to the original. For me their best contribution was Dave Gilmour mentoring the young Kate Bush to make her Kick Inside first album.

Although I got into PF with DSOTM & WYWH I started delving backwards towards Meddle then onto square one with The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Syd Barrett.

A sad story of brilliant young man that was obviously sensitive and predisposed to mental illness that LSD exacerbated so much so he retreated eventually back to Cambridge and lived a very reclusive life until his death in 2006.
His 2 solo albums (produced mostly by Gilmour, who replaced Syd, and who made sure some of Syd's songs were on compilations or live recordings to provide him with income from royalties) are favourites of mine and have a great lo-fi sound to them. That said, his money was controlled by his family due to his mental illness who got the share of his £1.7m.

I really can't separate my love for with and post Syd Pink Floyd.

I can take or leave Pink Floyd.

As mentioned DSOTM and WYWH are classics, but I've always preferred Momentary Lapse Of Reason - shoot me down, but just love the album

Pick any instrument, buy one, practise for about 20 years and when you can play as good as anyone in Pink Floyd you can say that they are shit, come back on the thread and show us what you've got.

If you can write a song in 7/4 time signature and know what that means you'll be light years ahead of any 'they're over produced' or 'dinosaur rock tossers' critics who have been on this thread without the basic understanding of music.

Oh and produce a piece of music that will be in the American charts for 14 years. Can't see Jony open chord mars writing an opus to challenge that!!

They have sold millions of albums around the world for six decades, filling almost every venue they have played live, yet some claim they are not top musicians, or as big as the Smiths. Some fucking jokers on here that really believe the shit they write.

Fully agree with all that about their sales and popularity .... and in my yoof, I did give 'em a try, and can enjoy Shine On and Wish You Were Here title track, did go and see them at Maine Road once even .... but on the whole I find them dull and miserable as feck. Just not my thang I guess ... but don't 'hate' them ... (I save that for Acca Dacca and their one song career ...)

My lad is learning to play guitar, he sent me a video of him playing some tunes.. I told him, when you can play as well as David Gilmour I'll buy you a Stratocaster

Got me digging out albums and my office Sonos has been banging out Pulse since..... love Pink Floyd and wish I'd seen them live.... If they did a Pulse type gig again I'd be there.

Not likely I expect as they don't need the cash and have had major bust ups in recent years..

I only got into them in the early 90s so I missed the Maine Road gig, which I'm gutted about. I did see them at Earls Court in 1994 though.
