How good were Pink Floyd?

Yeah, at the end of the day I couldn't give a shit who likes who tbh. :)

I just don't get this 'Dark side of the moon is the greatest ever made' stuff.
It's not musically adventurous there is no dynamic musicianship on it, yes a few good tunes. But it's mainly slow, ploding and boring in my opinion.
I guess it would be good for sending me to sleep.
I really don't understand how it has got the status it holds.

Truly, I'm very much someone who thinks each to their own and I'm certainly not here to persuade anyone to listen to something else. I love music and love to talk about it. And just this week idahoblues pointed out a band that's passed me buy but I've just ordered three cds by them because I think they are worth investigating.

As to Floyd, they are a band that has grown on me over the years, and I mean a lot of years. I've owned DSOTM since (IIRC) 1974 and a couple of girlfriends owned WYWH and I listened to that a lot and have always loved it but I was fairly dismissive of them in general until 1987. They are by no means my favourite band but they are reasonably high up the list these days.

I've got to get on with work now but one thing I'd say about DSOTM is that if you go to the states and listen to classic rock radio stations, you'll do well to go through a day without hearing something from DSOTM: it's popularity is huge. It's songs have staying power. I still think it is one of the best produced albums I have ever heard.

Because it tells a story. You are born and then you die. That's it.. and it's a powerful thing when the music is as good as it is on the album. Roger Waters as you say is a great songwriter but perhaps a better lyric writer as well.

It’s a concept album man. Therefore it’s clever ;-)
It shows off a good stereo pretty well too.

I’m with you on this. Good album, but greatest ever?
The Coldplay of their day and that’s not me insulting Coldplay.

No; it's just saying that there's some really dumb shit written. I'm not dismissive of all opinions, just some. And that's just an opinion.

There's a bottom line that Floyd are good at what they do and it's really not hard to understand why they are so successful. Just how good they are is certainly up for debate and what's good and bad in their catalogue is certainly up for debate: there's some bloody awful stuff in their early albums but they developed into a band that produced one of the greatest albums ever made plus several other very good ones.

Can't say I think The Final Cut is one of their best but when I finally got round to buying it, I did think it was better than I was expecting.
I can say that the final cut is defo not for everyone, especially the commercial hits crowd, but there is some exceptional stuff on it.
As for floyd in general, they did a lot of great stuff that i enjoyed at the time and a lot of it stands up well over the years, but I'm pretty bored of it now.

In much the same way that the Dippers 'n MANUre 'do things in the right way'! Axiom.

For me they started with Meddle, peaked with Dark Side and tailed off after the Final Cut.

No denying they have produced one of the best albums ever made and have been one of the most successful bands in history.

The Roger Waters years...

I see there is a release of this Nick Mason / Gary Kemp outfit that plays Syd and lesser known post-Syd Floyd songs. I like a lot of this material but I don't think I'll ever get my head around Kemp doing it. Though to be fair what little I've heard sounds OK.
