How important is the PL title actually?

Having a discussion with a fellow blue in work yesterday. My view is that, at this stage of our development, actually winning the league is of secondary importance to doing well in the CL. The reason for that is financial.

Coming second costs us about £1.8m I think compared to winning it but getting to the quarter or semi-final of the CL gains us more than ten times that. Plus it enhances our global standing, thereby increasing our commercial appeal. As increasing our income substantially is one of the key requirements of the business plan then that's more important than actually winning the league in my view.

Financially, you're correct. However, winning the title is vital to our standing in European/world football. Also, and I am not fully up to speed on how UEFA works, doesn't winning your domestic title help with your ranking (coefficient) for European football?

you worry me at times colin, you are way too nice.
winning the title is everything, stopping them winning it even more so.

we'll be in the CL title or not, i want that title.

To be fair PB, I support City to see us win trophies not to see our balance sheet improve!

You sound as if you've given up and are looking for a crumb of comfort!

Qualifying every year for the Champoions League is only of value to us if it helps us win trophies. Just qualifying for it, and achieving nothing else, will just be like supporting Arsenal these past 7 years!

Absolutely agree with this and have been saying it all season. The real football is played in the CL which is why United simply can't win it no matter how hard they try or how high they are seeded. I actually think that trying to copy their template to win the Pl is not only futile given the way English referees are afraid to give decisions against Fergie, but also dammaging to our style of play.

I seriously think we will in the CL before we win the PL. The important thing is that we finish top 3 to gain automatic qualification.

I don't think so.

I was under the impression that the coefficient is based solely on European competition results.

As to the original question, I think this is a case of sour grapes. I am desperate to win the league and any Citizen who says he / she is not is either lying or not a true Blue.

No. It's mainly on club performances in Europe, plus a general coefficient based on the national league's overall performance in Europe. Which is yet another reason why doing well in Europe is far more important than one place in the domestic league.

Unfortunately, we look bobbins in Europe so it's not much comfort really.

It's an argument we could use if we were currently sat in the quarters like Chelsea are, but as it is we've been booted out of Europe twice already this season.
