How important is the PL title actually?

I hate the way football is going when this kind of thing comes up. I am a Manchester City fan, I want to see City win the league. I will leave the money side of it to the chairman and directors.

It reminds me a bit of the Liverpool situation. They were always going to struggle to finish in the top 4 because after City and United there are 4 teams (5 if if you include Newcastle) for two spaces. So if they win two cups, in my view as a fan, they would have had an excellent season. Unfortunately football is less about fans and winning as it is about money and success without success.

Having a discussion with a fellow blue in work yesterday. My view is that, at this stage of our development, actually winning the league is of secondary importance to doing well in the CL. The reason for that is financial.

Coming second costs us about £1.8m I think compared to winning it but getting to the quarter or semi-final of the CL gains us more than ten times that. Plus it enhances our global standing, thereby increasing our commercial appeal. As increasing our income substantially is one of the key requirements of the business plan then that's more important than actually winning the league in my view.

CL money is required to offset FFPR..the title will come when its our time, probably not this year but it will come.. I can live with 2nd place and CL football next year..but ,and its a big but...football is a funny old game and we could well push for the title this year if the scum have a faux pas' along the way... 24 points to play for as of yet and we are well and truly in the race.

Don't talk such shit, it means everything to me.
Me talking shit? Of course as a City fan I want to see Vinny lift that trophy and Baconface explode. Which City fan doesn't? I've said before I didn't expect us to win it this season so I certainly haven't given up.

But the long-term good of the club is better served by performing well in the CL for the next 2 years. Some people simply can't see the bigger picture.

You've got to be an accountant ;).

Going out of the Champions League at the group stage caused mild disappointment.

Finishing second in the league with around 90 points will be devastating on the other hand. It could only happen to us and it would have to be second to them wouldn't it?

I doubt it would make it any more successful for the Sheikh, Mancini or any of the players either.

It's important for our club mentality. United will probably win it on mentality alone.

I see your point and in the general scheme of things it´s a good one

But the knock on effects of winning it this time are incalculable.

Future confidence in all comps
Psychological blow to rags
Increased fanbase and revenue
Players wanting to come

We would be ahead of schedule and there´s no guarantee that the next couple of years will prove easier to win it. It will be more even amongst the top 3 or 4 next season - that could help or hinder us. Winning it this year would seriously help us to stay ahead imo
