How long will the rebuild take?

We need to start the rebuild in January. Try and get 3 players in, mid, cb, right back if possible, preferably 2 midfielders. Would love that kid from Brighton who they brought on against us but his name escapes me
If the replacements aren't available in January then what?

Many regard the summer of 2017 as a rebuild and yet, of the players we signed that summer, it was only really Ederson and Walker who came straight into the team. Bernardo and Danilo didn't really feature properly until the following season and Mendy was out for all of it. Laporte came in January. Sometimes a couple of players really can make all the difference.

Over the summer we went from

Caballero
Sagna, Stones, Otamendi, Kolarov
Fernandinho
Sterling, De Bruyne, Silva, Sané
Aguero

to

Ederson
Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Delph
Fernandinho
Sterling, De Bruyne, Silva, Sané
Aguero

No major difference except at GK and full-back. It was just a necessary refresh that felt like a rebuild. No reason why 2/3 signings couldn't make all the difference for us, especially if Rodri comes back at his best as an added bonus.
Standing by this from a few weeks ago.

Replacing Walker, Gundogan, and Bernardo with better alternatives, plus adding a couple more players in key positions, will constitute something of a rebuild imo.

Anyone think we should have made more effort to keep some of the academy prospects as some squad players were getting wrong side of 30 ? Palmer Lavia Porro etc yeah we still need to go into the market but some of the players we had as youngsters seem to be doing OK now at other clubs

Priorities are a quality CDM, RB, LB, CAM, ST
Doing this list highlights just what a fantastic team we have if we didn’t have the ridiculous injury list we’ve got. It also shows that we haven’t been proactive in the transfer market. Granted we also need to phase out some of our older players, that I have suggested we keep, with quality replacements.

Depends on what you view as the rebuild and what you view as making us fully competitive again. When we get past this injury crisis we'll be harder to beat, but a few of the players injured are chronically absent, so need phasing out. To get us back in better standing this season, I think we need a midfielder and defender in Jan (if we can get rid of Walker).

Overall, I'd say we need 4/5 players over 3 windows with players being phased out/sold. CB/RB hybrid, 6, 8/10, GK if one leaves. I'd mention a striker but tbh, I'd much rather we start putting a youth striker on the bench and giving them opportunities. Not Pep's approach mind, but Haaland is playing a lot of minutes.

The Rodri situation was a tough one as who was going to come in and be his understudy. There didn't seem to be any obvious choices available?
Maybe, but that has been a glaring vulnerability for three summers and last summer we didn’t close on Guimares, who we now appear to be wooing again.

We pressed our luck and now are digging out.

At least 2 signings in January of first team status & 3/4 in summer we will be good to go next season but January signings are crucial

A rb a cb 2cm 1 playmaker a back up cf maybe even a wide player that can score goals.

Midfield needs addressing in January
The other 4 in the summer

Zubermendi
Guimares
Wirtz
Delap

We are already a season behind so at some point we will need to try and make this time back by being aggressive in the transfer market. As others have said - hopefully a full back and a holding player in Jan. The summer will be KDBs replacement plus one or two midfielders plus a backup striker and a left back. Unlikely we will get them all. I think this season is about top 4, next season about challenging for the league and Peps final season being in a place where a league and/or a champions league is realistic. This is best case and based on the previous 2 seasons it’s unrealistic but hopefully Viana addresses some of the issues. On the plus side - Liverpool will have to change and may lose TAA, Arsenal need to win something or Real may fancy one of their big players, Chelsea will always be uncertain and them lot are them lot. Exciting few seasons ahead.

Realistically 2 seasons but could be sooner

Think 2 quality additions and we'll be back among the mix, then maybe 1 or 2 on top of that to be certain

Think a summer without an international tournament, the pressure/fatigue of winning 4 in a row, the return of Rodri we will see a huge turn around in our form almost immediately even if we kept the same same squad (not that I expect/want us to have the same squad)

We don’t have a summer with no international tournament, we have the world club cup that all the team will be playing in.

Again it hasn't affected Chelsea or even the rags that much but beyond that it does become an issue

It hasn’t effected Chelsea because they’re allowed to sell themselves hotels and spunk 700m on players.

You can’t say it hasn’t effected the rags with a straight face mate come on.

4/5 windows and if things are all rosey from top to bottom and have a decent playing squad again I’d imagine pep will sign a new contract.
