Damocles is amazing. He's super hero material!
This is not ironic or sarcastic, I think he's fucking top. If he smoked weed I'd have a man crush on him.
I have an idea about living life that probably isn't the best, but suits me fine. It's like a rule of three or something. Pick 3 things in your life to take up, that will improve yourself. One of them should be physical, one of them should be intellectual, one of them should be something that is fun. I used to have a problem that every time I wanted to do something, if I skipped it for a day or so, I'd feel annoyed at myself and give up because I failed to keep it on track. If you pick three things, as long as you do at least one of them a day, you still get a sense of accomplishment from doing something, even if you skip the other two. This way, you keep making yourself better.
For example, I'm currently trying to get myself to consistently run 8 minute miles for 5 miles (physical), I'm learning Italian (intellectual), and I'm learning the whole Oasis back catalogue on my guitar (fun).
I also do this stuff on here, care for my sick mother, run my own business, play footy with my mates, go to the gym and keep reading scientific papers. I noticed that when you start forcing yourself to live life, you seem to actually do it more often. I know about certain subjects such as genetics or climate change because I forced myself to read about them as part of the intellectual part of the three. After a while, they become natural and you just take them as a given rather than something that's a challenge and you find something else.
Either way, one of the things that I tried once, after reading a paper about sleep cycles, is to take advantage of the 90 minute pattern and see if it worked for me. It was discovered that muscles are at rest in exactly the same manner when you lie down as when you sleep, the only thing that really needs to switch off is your brain. If you take advantage of this fact (i.e. you sleep when your brain is trying to close your eyes rather than when you feel a bit tired), then you can sleep less and get more done. Unfortunately, this builds up a 'sleep deficit', and you crash for 18 hour days every now and again. However, that's only really 12 hours longer than you would normally sleep, and it happens rarely enough that the time gained makes it worthwhile.
WE only get one shot at this life thing, I don't want to spend it resting. Think of life as one big RPG game, like Warcraft. The more you're logged in, the more you get done and more you level up your skills :).
