How many points to win the league?

We could just win our remaining home games including Rags and Chavs it will be enough to win the title , we might lose at the Dippers,Goons and Spuds all usually historically difficult games for us , but would expect something like W 33 D 2 L 3 Pts 101 by the end of the season , and a couple of cups thrown in :). Which will mean Carlton Pogba will be player of the season based on shirt sales and tweets and Klopp manager of the year for playing attacking expansive football and only scoring about 30 goals less than the Champions of England.

We would have to throw this away, it would be the biggest fuck up in Premier League history.

I think 9 wins (89 points) will definitely win us the title and I wouldn't be surprised if even less, maybe 85 points, gets the job done. Record points totals would be nice, I think this side would very much deserve it, however the only thing that really matters is picking up that trophy at the end of the season.

I agree 85 points will do it , it could be less but 85 points will do it.

To put more context into it, Chelsea have 17 games left, and are 17 points adrift, so they need a point more than us (averaged) every single game left, united are 15 points adrift with 16 games left, so pretty much the same equation, our drop off would have to catastrophic from here.
Exactly this, to lose from here would need us to be reffed by Moss, Madely and Mason only from now on mmmmmmm.

If everyone carries on with the same form of the first 21/22 games then we need 7 more wins. 83 points.

I expect someone will do better than that though so I'm still sticking to 90.

Just looked at the league table for the first time since last night. 62pts from 22 games is just crazy. I reckon 85pts will be enough as the chasing pack will drop points in the rush for top 4, unless Chelsea can break away from the group.

Just been looking at the table and it occurred to me that, with us on 62 pts and 16 games left (i.e. 48 pts to play for) we could lose 3 of those 16 games and still end up with over 100 pts - more than any other team has done before. Staggering really.

The top 6 fixtures are brutal for our rivals when the important months arrive. So important that we get the Liverpool and Arsenal games dealt with early. Forget unbeaten runs, get the points lead extended and rests players around Basle, Bristol, and Burnley ready for strong run-in when Foden and Jesus, and possibly Mendy can really force some silverware over the line.

The Arsenal game will be moved if one of us make the League cup final. They have been know to rearrange it for a few days later though if a free week.

I really believe that April and May fixtures will be irrelevant. We will have this sewn up in March given current form. Everton away is the game.

Arse getting something off Chelsea tonight would be huge for us.

You just can't see the rags getting through those fixtures unscathed, even with their legendary flukeyness.

Chelsea are a different matter entirely & fully capable of keeping the season alive for a good while, if they go on a run. Be a huge result for us, if someone kills that before it starts.

There have been two 12 point leads thrown away in the recent-ish past. Newcastle in 1997 and United in 1998.

A Chelsea win tonight will see us having a 14 point lead with 17 games to go (51 points). There is still a long long way to go! Injuries, suspensions, poor referee displays, timewasting going unpunished, the opposition getting goals out of nothing...

Form comes in runs of games n'all, a winning run can easily become a losing one. It's a trend and falling out of form and getting stuck in a rut is easily done.

This is where the managing comes in from the people now called coaches. Picking the right players and tactics, fitness and recovery, all well and good but also keeping the mentality of the squad right. Focus, determination, desire, concentration, calmness...

The word i remember Mancini used more than any other was concentration. It is so important but often difficult to concentrate to a high standard all the time. Snooker players and darts players say that you can be as good as the best in ability but your lack of being able to concentrate to the highest standard is what will hold you back from being as consistent as those at the top. If you can find ways to master that, you will do well at keeping up a winning run. Also not letting standards of effort drop. You ever noticed in work yourselves, when you dip down a bit in your effort it's often hard to get back up to where you were previously? And staying calm as well. I remember seeing a video of the Barcelona squad in a Extra Time half time with Puyol going round looking like he was geeing everyone up and Guardiola having a word with him showing a "calm down" gesture. It's not about getting excited and "up for it", it's about staying calm.

It's now almost more about all of that side of things than it is team selection and tactics.

I had to check as you almost caused me a heart attack but actually it would still be a 14 point advantage over Chelsea in such case. :)

Aha, cheers, i hadn't looked at the table... EDITED^

Festive fixtures killed United hopefully cup commitments will do the same to Chelsea

This is why we need to carry on our good run of form. It'll allow us to manage our squad and games to accommodate all the competitions we happen to be in later on without worrying that we might jeopardize the league by pursuing the cups.

I think Chelsea will be strong in the last few months, they have an uncannily good injury record and seem to be able to play a full strength side for most games. I actually think they'll win at Arsenal tonight, unfortunately
