How many points to win the league?

Not so much a case of not trying as hard or anything close. More of a case of re-prioritising certain fixtures.

Imagine for example we draw the first leg of the League Cup semi Final. Would it then be wrong to rest a few players for the Newcastle League game to enable a full strength team to go and try to win the 2nd leg? More so if by that time we have beaten or drawn at Liverpool?

Totally get what you are saying about the Utd and Newcastle blow ups.....its a different league now, it would be difficult for any one of the chasing pack to put the kind of run together required to get anywhere near us. Dont forget they are involved in Europe and are all fighting for three Champions league places. 15 points at this stage of a season is near impossible to pull back. We have Chelsea and United to play at home where if either were closing the gap a draw would be suffice for us.

I am not suggesting we suddenly play a "league Cup" team against Spurs away in the League, but prioritising cup games where appropriate might be an idea.
As long as we take no unnecessary risks in the Prem. Because lets face it, we will be the biggest laughing stock of all time if we don't win the league from here.

The most Chelsea can get is 96 pts.
Our target then is 97 pts.
35 pts from 16 games + Chelsea & Utd can't afford to drop a single point.
Mtg
I can assure you we don't need anything like 97 points to win the league. I reckon we'll end up with less than that as well. If we win the league in March/April I could see us resting players in the league to focus on other trophies.

Having won zip last year, the league and CL are priority. Im afraid rotating against Bristol and Burnley is required whilst we operate on 1 of Silva or De Bruyne and 1 of Aguero or Jesus (basically Sergio atm). Should have enough quality to win still. Walker and Fernandinho need looking after as neither have great back up
Sorry mate but your thinking is far too negative for me,this is a team that could rewrite the history books.
We've given ourselves a cushion in the league and can use that to rotate players and not always play our strongest 11.
With the cup draws we have we are in a great position to go deep into all 3 competitions and shouldn't jeopardize that by fielding weakened teams.
History beckons so lets not fuck about with the team.

We so far have won 20/22.

If we beat

Newcastle
WBA
Leicester
Brighton
Swansea
Huddersfield

At home and

Stoke, West Ham & Southampton away, that gives us 89 points with a huge goal difference.

As many are saying though, we've shown no real sign of dropping points/losing games. If we play half decent in the League Cup and CL last 16 we should effectivly be playing a shadow side in second legs and getting rest to key players.
Arsenal then gets moved.

Get five wins in the next 8 games and we will be getting very close.

Probably another 6 wins

80 points won't do it - one of Chelsea. Liverpool or even the Rags are capable of 15 or 16 wins from the remaining games. We have to assume Chelsea are capable of getting 96 points. We therefore need 34 more points to be certain. If Chelsea draw tonight we need 32. That is 10 wins and 2 draws and 4 defeats.

Still not the time to get complacent. Getting a draw at Anfield would be huge. We have by no means won this league yet.

Chelsea won with 93 last year and Spurs were 2nd with 86. The most the scum can put up is 99 but realistically the best they could hope for is 89 which would be 47 of 57 points. That would be 15 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss. I honestly don’t know how they’d pull that off.

If they did City would need 35 points which would be something like 10 wins, 5 draws and 4 losses.

Until I looked at these numbers I didn’t realize how much of a miracle it would take for City to lose.

Pray that this does not come back to bite you on your anus! And put you on the bluemoon infamous list!

the same amount of points as the maximum number our opponents can get - this formula should work (due to our goal difference)

our points (62)

united points(47) remaining games 16 x 3 = (48), max 95 - 62 = 33 points needed to win the league if the shite win all their games
chelsea point(45) remaining games 17 X 3= (51), max 96 - 62 = 34 points needed to win the league if chelsea win all their games
liverpool points(44) remaining games 16 x 3 = (48), max 92 - 62 = 30 points
tottenham points(40) + (51) - 62 = 29 points
arsenal (38 + 51) - 62 = 27 points

All of these teams have to play each other and us, so only one of them can achieve maximum points.

This thread makes me buzzing!

Nothing won yet, but only really negative and not very likely scenarios seem to not give us the title. Draw or better against the top 6 opposition should take us a long way, starting at Klanfield next hopefully. The bookmakers odds of 1.01 for us to win the title says a lot as well really.

Good evaluation, and factually correct.
The only thing i would say is that we have been in record breaking form and even at this rate have been recovering an average of 2.81 points per game not the maximum of 3.

Understood,

fact remains we don't win the league until it is mathematically impossible for any team to catch us. If you apply this formula and our current points are greater than their max, then we've got the league won.

12 more wins gives us the league. If we beat Chelsea and the rags, however, we only need (if my maths is right) another 8 w8ns against other teams

85 - 90 points should be enough, seeing as the others are taking points off each other/ drawing games. If Arsenal/ Chelsea tonight is a draw or a Gunners win then that should be enough.

16 games left. 8 wins and a couple of draws should do it.

People are split on priorities and I understand both sides. Go all out and win the lot or prioritise cups as follows: CL and PL first, FA and CC second.
I favour the latter. Simply because we've seen not rotating backfire in the past. It doesn't give the kids a chance and risks big injuries that hurt you. Remember Negredo? 7-0 up and return leg injury. Never recovered from that. So the Caraboa can definitely be saved for Bravo, Mangala, Foden if he's back in time. The FA cup can be for Yaya, Danilo, Gundogan and Bernardo too. Go strong in PL and CL then reassess after Basle first leg.

Out of 16 games? Can’t see it but probably right at the minimum requirement for us to win the league

Considering we've played 32 games, and won 29 of them, with only 1 defeat in a dead rubber (for us) CL game, does anyone seriously see us losing 6 league games from now ?

We can probably afford to do that too, even 8 wins and 2 draws gets us to 88 points, but I just don't see us losing 6 from here, so anything better than 8 wins 2 draws especially if we ensure we don't lose against those just below us.

Just enjoy the position we are in, nobody has EVER been in this position before, and if you are worrying, then just remember that we have Pep in charge, and he still thinks we can improve yet !
