Putting this year aside...

I got to wondering... what, mathematically, is the least number of points necessary to possibly win a 38-game P/L title?
===
If one side wins and another loses, 3 points are generated.
Whereas, if a draw occurs, only 2 points are generated.

So, the least total number of points would accrue to the league if every team drew every match they played.

Should every team in the league somehow draw all of their 38 games, then each team is on 38 points. Some sort of procedure would then be necessary in this extremely unlikely eventuality to decide upon the winner.

So 38 points, are the least possible to win the league (assuming that no additional points were awarded to break ties).

If one were to rule out point ties, then the least number of points to win the league must be 37 plus one win at some point in the season for a total of 40.

Ironically, the 40-point mark traditionally touted as the minimum to afford near certainty against relegation is also the least number of points necessary to win the league outright!
And 19 out of the 20 teams could call themselves The Invincibles!

You could win with 39. Every game but 3 are draws. In those 3, Team A beats Team B who beats Team C who beats Team A. Team A-C finish on 39 and the one with the better goal difference wins.

I know you said ruling out points ties, but winning by goal difference is bona fide. In fact, I vaguely remember the title being decided that way some season.

It’s a life sentence for some of us.
When the takeover happened, I remember promising myself to make the most of it. I think I have. I think I’ve always accepted it cannot last forever, and so want to savour every moment.

This is our time. Right now. Make the fucking most of it guys, as it is bound to end one day.

In that case then, winning by goals scored is also bona fide. So all games are nil nil except 2 that we play against different teams are 1-1 & 2-2, we win on goals scored, with all teams on 38 points! Which teams to get relegated out of the 17 that drew all games nil-nil would be an issue though......

It is, as all things must. Alas, Swales wired my synapses. Actually, he welded them.

I must admit to still being in a state of shock. After going to my first game at aged 3 months and progressing to sitting on the white wall in the north stand, to moving towards the kippax, it’s strange and hard to contemplate how good we are now, as a team, as a club, as a commercial enterprise - I’m lucky enough to have done well in life, in fact you could say my fortunes have mirrored city’s since the take over.

For some of us it’s hard to shake the old habits, the old humour, but I’m loving every minute of this.

Most clubs get 5-6 years of fortune; we however I think are lucky enough to be only witnessing the beginning of an era - my son is 14 and has only seen success, I have made him sit down and watch the seasons of dire, low performing teams - and the fans reaction to show him what it truly means to be a city fan. Took some time but he understands.

We are happy now but don’t take for granted and appreciate what we have. It’s that simple - as a group of fans we are self deprecating, amazed, but most of all city.
