The format has changed a few times since United did that and United, Liverpool, and Chelsea have all competed in it since whilst not forfeiting a cup competition.Don't forget if we win the CL then we will likely have to give up the FA Cup or League cup for the FIFA Club world cup then we are world champions!
The format has actually changed again controversially a couple of months ago so it only now occurs every four years. We (or anyone else) will not be going anywhere this December, but somewhere in 2021, and with upto 11 other European sides (24 clubs in total). There is a good chance it will effectively replace the Confederations Cup, but seeing as the money is coming from Saudi, it will only be in Qatar if they sort out their differences between now and then.
