How many US states have you been to?

I'd love to re-visit the states. I'm not interested in all the tourist traps, I'd love to just rent a car, preferably something with a big V8, and just drive across the country.

Route 66? Sounds good but then I imagine driving in a straight line for hours on end. Loses it's appeal.
I once drove 31 miles in Arizona without touching the steering wheel.

I'd like to visit the sort of one horse towns that have never seen a tourist and are populated by people who have never been more than 5 miles from where they was born.
I did a bit of that on my first visit, the real America rather than the tourist traps. I met some interesting people. I even spent a day in the woods with some rednecks. Got absolutely leathered on Becks and shot a fish with a .44Magnum. The highlight was trying to shoot a turtle with an AK47, but I was too pissed to aim properly, thank fuck.
Getting drunk with rednecks and shooting things was a very surreal experience and one I will never forget.

Intuitive tracking!

Sounds like an experience. Admittedly though it appeals less than the driving to me.

Getting drunk with rednecks and shooting things with a crossbow was very surreal. At one point they made me squeal like a pig.

I hope you didn't try to chat up any of their sisters, they had dibs.

Our car broke down so they had to get the trailer. On the way back I was sat in the front of a pick up which was towing a trailer with our car on it. The lad who was driving had been on the piss with us all day. He was drinking a can of Bud as he drove along and had a loaded .44Magnum resting on the dashboard. I remember thinking just how fucking mad it seemed and a million miles away from anything I had ever experienced before.
On the way back we stopped off for something to eat. It was bar/restaurant/store/post office all in one and the only one for miles around. I had the best burger I have ever tasted in my life. That could have been because I was very drunk and very hungry, but I'd love to go back and find out.
