how small we really are

We have existed for to short a time to make such assumptions.
Even hitlers olympic speach has traveled next to no distance in the grand scheme ( our first radio beacon as it were able to reach far out).
Basically time and distance are the issues so statistically you can easily assume there is a reasonable chance of their being advanced life. The idea we can't detect it yet so therfore it does not exist sounds extremely ignorant.
The vastness of the cosmos at least leaves it at 50-50 minimum.

If advanced life detects us it is just a shame it will be hitlers voice they hear first.

To quote the film contact "it would be an awful waste of space"

Yes, because advanced intelligent lifeforms will obviously be setting up radio receivers.

Advanced life it is safe to assume would have radio signal equiptment imo.
You also missed my point entirely which was to try and give an example as to why no other advanced life would probably have a clue we did exist.

Any civilization that has spaceflight will absolutely definitely have radio.

The laws of physics don't change anywhere in the Universe. Aliens will know about hydrogen, helium, gold, zinc, e=mc[super]2[/super], F=ma and everything else.

I think if we ever did find intelligent life out there then we would be surprised at how similar their technological growth is to ours.

That biggest star is huge. I keep trying to visualise its scale - it's almost beyond comprehension.

If they were bi pedal humanoids or....?

I sometimes disagree with Damocles on other issues but on this particular topic he's the best on the forum.

There's no information either way because our sample size is just one.

The evolution of this planet tended towards large reptiles until an asteroid wiped them out and allowed mammals to grow in size and brain capacity. Before this, many mammals struggled as they were seen as prey for the bigger lizards.

There's no telling really how life and intelligence would have evolved on a different planet with different conditions and different astronomical events.

If I had to take an absolute shot-in-the-dark guess, I would go for any intelligent life requiring the ability to use tools thus should have one or more gripping instruments like a hand. There's no reason I can think of that 4 legs was the magic number for our evolution outside of that's what we used to use to swim with in the early reptile days.

Perhaps other intelligent life is fish based and never made the jump to land because it's barren on their planet? Maybe it is lizard based, or an organism similar to jellyfish. There's no real reason why this couldn't be true as all the information we have about how life evolves comes from Earth conditions.

We do know two things however with a pretty high degree of certainty; the life will extremely probably be carbon based and it will extremely probably require water to live.

what did it say at the end, it would take 1100 years for a passenger plane to go around it just once! 1100 fucking years! Bullshit fuck shit mind fuckingly impossible to imagine the size of that fucking thing fuck.

Imagine how many fucking lottery cards you'd buy on the flight.

Imagine the problems with DVT!

In The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, the ultimate torture device is something called "The Total Perspective Vortex."

How does it work?

Well, in the words of author Douglas Adams:

When you are put into the Vortex you are given just one momentary glimpse of the entire unimaginable infinity of creation, and somewhere in it a tiny little mark, a microscopic dot on a microscopic dot, which says, "You are here."
