How the mighty have fallen

I saw a post on Facebook earlier today about Portsmouth FC.
I never knew that they won Division One in consecutive seasons in 1948/9 and 49/50.
And have done virtually fuck all since then.
'Play up Pompey '
They won two consecutive titles! Surely they should have received multiple trumped up charges for making football uncompetitive.

It happens. Huddersfield were the kings of English football back in the 1930s. Or Wolves in the 1950s. Spurs; double winners in 1961, couldn’t win an argument these days. Eras of dominance come to an end. Look at the dips; one league title in 34 years. Or our lovely neighbours; no title in 11 years. How many did they win in the previous 11? The decline can be slow and painful, we know all about that.
Huddersfield were the first team to win the 1st Division 3 times on the bounce from 1924-26.
The manager Herbert Chapman won it the first two times before joining Arsenal. When Huddersfield won it for the third time, Chapman's Arsenal were runners up.

In 1931 Chapman won it with Arsenal and the Gunners became the 2nd club to win it 3 times on the bounce from 1933-35 - but only the first of the three triumphs was with Chapman as manager. During the winter of the 33/34 season, Chapman developed pneumonia and after a short spell in hospital, he sadly passed away.

When I first started following City in the early 60,s Northampton were the team to beat, they got promoted from the 2nd division then I’m sure they got relegated for the next four years.

Up until now, I’d always thought that Chapman was Huddersfield's manager for all threefold their consecutive titles, and the same at Arsenal.

You learn something new every day.

I think it's more surprising nowadays because the big clubs have rigged the game so much in their favour that they can go 11 years without winning a title and still splash the most cash every summer in the hope of getting the best team. They can finish behind a clearly better team, and then still poach all of their best players in the summer. They've made it impossible to break in, but crucially for themselves, they've made it almost impossible to fall out of it too.

To be fair, the Liverpool one doesn't ring a bell with a lot of younger fans as only people of a certain age will remember the days when they dominated. The Rags not winning the league I. 11 years even has me surprised. 11 years! It might even stretch to 12 years soon.
