How to beat park the bus

Currently we don’t have a David Silva (lock picker), a Tevez (just outside box specialist) and an Aguero (lethal from every angle).

We’re quick to criticise Palace/Southampton etc but the way we move up the pitch, slowly, stifle the ball, play sidewards passes, try to fatigue teams mentally rather than trying to be proactive is also killing the entertainment.

As Pep always says he does not want a basketball match and that we cannot play that way. The parked bus is what he prefers to face.
Perhaps this year our dynamism lacking, so yeah. But there are low blocks and really low blocks.
See how pans out next year if he gets the squad he wants

Train one or two players to send in bullet shots from a distance. Ask wingers to deliver bouncy balls at moderate speed back to our shooter. Stand shooter 5 metres outside of penalty box. Easier for shooter to get over top of bouncing passes so ball doesn't keep flying into the stand. Don't bother about accuracy, a rocketing ball can easily be deflected, go into the net or even hit an opponent's hand. Before the ball reaches our shooter, encourage the players in advanced positions to scaper sideways to avoid blocking the shot, confuse the opposition and perhaps collect any rebounds.

I would play Doku down the middle every so often, he could run at the defence and he'd either get a shot in, tackled or a penalty.

It's called a parked bus for a reason, you're not supposed to get by one.

The fact City have managed to do it pretty much every week is testament to how great this cycle has been under Pep.

The only 'tactic' to overcome it is exactly what we do, try to move people out of position and hope someone switches off or runs out of steam.

Sure, you can load it into the box or whip a cross in from deeper, when Kev could manage it, but it's not a tactic to set up for prior to a game.

Fact is, we play the law of averages and sometimes you can be on the wrong side of that, like yesterday, Southampton or even Norwich away the other year.

We don't have a striker like Sergio anymore who can work on the front post run or operate with little back lift inside the six yard box.

Haaland's entire MO is to hang out of the six yard box and wait for a pull back which needs to be increasingly precise, because defenders know he needs it out of his feet for such a big unit.

All it needs is an eight and ten who are able to pull the strings and two full-backs who have the raw recovery pace when a move breaks down, like Walker had.

What about him using the players he bought in January or didn’t he want them.

Previous seasons we had higher quality players.

We dont this season, and we have suffered as a result.

Pep already found the solution though, he abandoned the back 3 to have an extra number in midfield and played a more passing game on the ground via the 2422.

These last 2 games, perhaps Pep was surprised both Southampton and Palace parked the bus, but he went to the back 3 again.

He has sorta undid the good work he already discovered, we demolished Palace in the 2422 because we played brave.

Instead we had no numbers in midfield, so the CBs just played long balls.

And who would that be, Kushanov looked bloody quick to me but has dropped off the face of the earth, Haaland is much better than hanging round the six yeard box, he’d be great as a counter attacker ball over the top as was shown yesterday had the keeper not knocked it out the way. We do t have anyone who can put a decent cross on his head at the back post, he’d be better around the penalty spot for a pull back or at least running onto it. I still don’t think he was a Pep signing he was a CFG signing, Pep has always like small mobile players something Haaland is clearly not, his first season everyone was taken by surprise even Pep at how many he’s scored and yes I know he’s still scoring but are defences terrified of him, I don’t think so.

Bournemouth and Fulham won’t park the bus

Anything less than a win is pointless for them

There is no magic wand.

Opposition teams across the Premier League have become increasingly good at parking the bus. Therefore we need exceptional skill to carve out decent chances against a wall of well organised players.

That said, City actually created quite a few chances yesterday, but we did not take them. I think the main problem was our shot conversion ratio yesterday.

I don't like watching the tippy tappy across the 18 yard box. It is boring. Some people blame Pep for this. I don't agree. The opposition using really negative tactics is to blame. This includes the supposed stronger teams in the Premier League doing this too e.g. remember that humble lot called Arsenal using a low block. All of these teams are hoping for a smash and grab against City. You can't blame them because they are incapable of standing toe to toe with City, so they play to their strengths. Men behind the ball. And these teams have be come very good at this. It's dull. I call it anti football, but I understand why teams do it. Its the only way they can hope to beat City.

City's defence looks tighter of late which is encouraging. We are however creating fewer chances, so we need to be more clinical in front of goal when the opportunities arise. We have also missed having someone from midfield popping up with 15 goals this season.

I'll be glad to see the back of this season, but if we can get a couple of dynamic midfielders that score and create goals we may be a lot happier next season.

Come on City!

Well said. All this ‘rush up the field’ stuff is useless when their defence is already set up. The last 2 games in particular the opposition have hardly come out of their own half. After their defence is set up the only thing you can do is move the ball around and try and pull the defence out of shape and find a gap.

I was a basketball coach for many years and the only way to beat a ‘park the bus’ is to get the ball up the field before it is set up but unfortunately these teams rarely commit players forward and when they do and loose the ball someone gets onto the lost ball and blocks any chance of a fast break which is exactly what happened yesterday.

I thought we played extremely well yesterday and last week against two teams who packed the area and gave no room. Both Savi and Doku came up against a team that put at least two men on them every time they got the ball and yet both managed to get past a few times but when they did the area was packed out and no room for any striker.

Score the chances you do get.
Which means shooting and not taking three touches in the box.

Doku and Savinho do get to the biline but Haaland is always behind three players at the back stick.
If not him, then we do need someone making the near post late run to give our wingers some hope of creating something productive.

It has to be a first time connection shot on target. We just don’t do that.

Why not surprise all teams coming to ours next season we set up with a low block and hit them on the counter once they step over the halfway line let’s see how they like it.

by not being being brutally static when building attacks. we get into a very poor pattern and a slow one.

What was the game this season where we stood with the ball in the edge of our box and the opposition didn’t try to press us or try to win the ball back?

Not sure but we could just pass it among the defenders bit like now only in front of our own box
