How to dress for a job interview?

Just remember to wear your suit jacket and not your straight jacket, the rest will look after itself.

Suit, shirt and a tie, no exceptions. You might see people without ties in workplaces but they already have a job. A suit without a tie implies casual and an interview is not casual, it is formal. There is no such thing as overdressing unless you are being interviewed by someone you know or if it is in a casual setting like a bar or something.

If you are in a place that will mark you down for wearing a suit, I wouldn't bother going with the job anyway!

I employ over 200 people for a global company.
My area is worth 6.5 million per year and I promise you, wearing a full suit and tie is the thing to do.

Better to be a touch over dressed than too casual.

Short sleeved shirt (chequered), striped tie, with a huge knot (6th form style), nylon trousers with mental creases, a pair of polka dot braces, and a pair of knee high DMs. Job's as good as your. Oh, and to make doubly sure, chew gum.

Never worked in an office nor would I want to but I went for a job once doing my trade in Packaging/printing in a pair of shorts, it was the middle of Summer and scorchio, after a trade test and a lengthy interview I got the job no problems

If someone walked into my office for an interview, and they were not wearing a shirt and tie they wouldnt get the job. Unless everyone else I was interviewing were dire and they were very very good.

Interview a young lad this week (office job) and I was impressed with how smart he was, showed he'd made an effort and he arrived 15 mins early - he got the job

My boss insists on ties and keeps spares in the office which he passes to people if they turn up without one

I'm working for a very old established and traditional investment management firm at the moment. The back office, which is mainly in Liverpool, is a little more relaxed but if you're in the London office then it's suit, tie, cufflinks, black shoes and braces. Pocket handkerchief is optional. No dressing down on Fridays either.

If you're working in Barclays HQ in Canary Wharf or Lloyds HQ in Gresham Street (both of which I've done) then a high standard of attire is also expected.

For an interview, its shirt tie and suit always. And there are suits and there are suits. Dont wear a shit looking one and dont wear it like a twat. The following rules are important:
get a normal fit work suit, not a skinny fit one and definitely not one of those god awful shiny ones. Dark blue is good, the brighter blue ones Ive seen about recently are not. Do not spoil it by being one of those flash cockknockers that wear the same colour shirt and tie. Not wishing to sound unpleasant, but if you dont dress smartly often it is easy to look like you're going to your court hearing. As for ties, avoid skinny ones, avoid massive knots, and get a shirt with a collar you do up comfortably and do up the top button ffs. I see lads who turn up for work with me with ties hanging down and top button open and think there is no point, its one or the other. Dark blue suit, white shirt, tie, clean shoes. The job will be half yours just for making the effort, trust me. Its not as old fashioned as it sounds, its the small things that count when you are trying to be the best candidate in a group of applicants.

I doubt anyone went for an interview for an office job and didnt get it because they were wearing a suit and tie

Suit, tie, clean shaven unless you have an established beard, no matter what the office job is. First impressions count for everything.
