How UEFA shifted the goalposts on FFP. The definitive story.

Anyone see this? https://www.theguardian.com/news/2019/jan/17/how-a-deluge-of-money-nearly-broke-the-premier-league

Long and very interesting article which is an extract from a new book about the rise of the PL. We (naturally) get the blame for leading the demand for a greater share of the foreign TV revenue, which is currently shared equally. There's no great evidence to support that but a bit later on there's the story about the old guard - United, Liverpool & Arsenal - meeting up to discuss just that.

Indeed, an interesting piece and whilst skewed early on to gain attention by focusing on foreign investment at City eventually does recognise that Arsenal, Pool and the Rags have wanted more for much longer. The strength of the PL is in the whole however wanting to review the original founding agreement nearly 30 years later is s natural course of action.

the thing that gets me is manchester city was never a small club ?? just a badly run club and all it needed was a backer with the right people, we have seen in the last ten years how to run a football club in the right way on and off the field of play, uefa and the rest are just digging for old dirt because manchester city are now a power house club

forget little old city ?? its now MIGHTY MANCHESTER CITY we are the best run club in the world, and the whole of the investment from sheikh mansour was money well spent, and today manchester city have so many irons in the fire we are now in a place to pick and choose who we partner with, sponsors, media, internet, they all want to jump on board this ship the mighty manchester city, we control all investment and sponsorship to benefit the club not just the other way, we now ask for a price they have to pay not the other way round, forget FFP its dead in the water manchester city are clear of any rules they set up and my bet is UEFA we come running to us very soon and dance to our tune

I agree entirely with your opening line. City was one of British football's elite clubs for decades. I think the problem is that (and maybe as fans we've contributed to this) the story of failed 3rd tier club becoming mega rich and suddenly winning trophies is a powerful story. What we need to start doing is banging the drum about what we were without that desperate late 1990s period. I go on about this a lot these days but it was the late 1990s that was out of character with our history not the present. Prior to our one season in the 3rd tier we often spent big, breaking transfer records etc. We often had huge crowds. We often challenged for honours. We were often described as one of the Big Four/Five/Six depending on the era.

Time we started focusing on the late 1990s as the blip and not the norm. There's plenty of evidence out there to thrust into the faces of anyone who says Where Were You? or even that shite about us being a small club that got lucky.

the little old city was a tag that 99% of other clubs could be called, united and liverpool can stand alone but the rest can be in the same bracket as manchester city was, but now little old liverpool have not won the league for 28 years and still claim to be a mighty club ??? forget winning once in the champions league its a top 4th place competition now and anybody knows its the league title that counts most in england

THE MIGHTY MANCHESTER CITY needs shouting from the hill tops

We all need to shout it. We need to challenge every negative piece with facts. Theclub are in a difficult position plus, of course, for some in senior positions it is important to show growth etc. For us fans - the guardians of our club - it’s important we tell it’s it is. I’ve been to quite a few supporter events recently and some of our own support has fallen for the jibes believing them to be true.

Agree the need to challenge every negative perception or media nonsense regurgitated by fans of other clubs. In the past couple of years alone, I can recall doing so successfully with supporters of Hull, Crystal Palace, Bolton, Wigan, Sheffield United, Everton and.. yes.. even The Red Filth and The Anfield Road Formation Brick Throwers' Society! Do it calmly and with the facts and they (mostly) get to the point where you can see them thinking 'Oh.. never realised that..' But sometimes you do need the patience of a saint!

And yes, as you point out, City has always been a major club, playing an important part in the development of the English game, as much as any of the self-entitled 'Sky 4/Big 5' of recent years and also alongside and as well as the Accrington Stanleys and Prestons and Sheffield Wednesdays and Notts Countys and so on of this world.

Because, that's what you challenge when you take on negative perceptions of City amongst other supporters, especially those of the 'self-entitled' brigade who look down on everyone else.. the implied, attendant criticism of each and every other club up and down the land, for not being 'big' or 'important' enough.. for not having any 'Istree..

And a good proportion of it started or created by the media, the old if you repeat a lie often enough it becomes the truth ..
