HS2 - Birmingham to Manchester scrapped.

Is anyone actually surprised that levelling up has actually amounted to naught? Seriously?

Personally think this is a shame and yet another example of this country’s inexorable spiral of decline. Yes it’s fucking expensive, but so is any worthwhile infrastructure project.

Our railways are an absolute disgrace and in some instances an embarrassment for a so called ‘world class’ country. When you compare them to Italy, Switzerland and France (for example) they really are beyond wank.

Nought.

It doesn’t even join the original destinations and now it’s to be the Northern PowerOuthouse because, ironically, ends don’t meet…

Well colour me surprised…

This government is fucking rubbish, charlatans and sadly it’s looking like the incoming one next year won’t be much fucking better as they seemingly are also towing the “cost” lines being trotted out.

No shit massive national infrastructure projects cost money. Just fucking build it, it’s needed, we can afford it and don’t let any of these cunts tell you otherwise.

The UK is basically at the point it can’t build a few hundred fucking miles of railway line, embarrassing.

The govt spent £410bn on Covid shite (half of which they didn’t need), yet now they’re shelving part of a £100bn transport infrastructure that will help the country for decades?

Bunch of idiots this lot.

Even Johnson thinks it’s a stupid idea.

Both legs of the North should have been done, going up to Glasgow on the Manchester side and Newcastle then Edinburgh on the Leeds side. Then Liverpool to Manchester < Leeds+Sheffield > Hull should have been done. As well as Cardiff to London.

Yet they’ve already ditched it to Leeds and now they’re not even going to bother with the Manchester line.

They can afford it, get it fucking done… all of it!

No one should really be surprised. Thanks to the idiotic Brexit deal, capacity on the existing HS1 has had to be cut right back to cope with the extra checks required for each passenger. Wouldn’t surprise me if that fell into disuse as well. Plans to extend high speed rail connectivity from the UK to a number of new destinations around Europe have been cancelled and existing destinations have also been removed. Economic vandalism is what this government does.

If it does only get built to Birmingham, it will be a complete white elephant. It's purpose was to free up capacity on the south end of the West Coast Main Line in order to operate more outer suburban and freight services. Operating only to Birmingham will create only 3 paths per hour, some of which will still need to head to the West Midlands to serve Coventry and Wolverhampton.
If phase 1 construction is completed, and it's built to Handsacre (just north of Lichfield), joining up to the existing WCML, at least Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow services could use it.
However, not building phase 2 will mean that local services from south of Manchester will never increase in frequency, and may actually become worse if all HS2 services from London and Birmingham to Manchester have to use the existing Crewe to Manchester route.

Just another excuse this was to build another tunnel through London, with no idea of what they were voting on, all to spend public money.

Crossrail being the same.

This was Northern Power House rather than Levelling Up. Levelling up is dishing £20m out to your district council to put a new roof on the town hall, repurpose as office space, and then do up the disused swimming baths as an artisan market. Look at every levelling up bid and they all turd polishing exercises.

Even before that horrible "B-word" entered the dictionary, our country went into decline and our railways were still beyond shit, still paying the most for our train tickets than any other EU country. The infrastructure is old, Pacers only got phased out two years ago and nothing is done to improve it.

The ridiculousness of leaving the EU simply sped all this up, harmed our economy and we will be poor like Moldova or Albania at this rate, just a lot more earlier than it would have been still being in the EU.

"Plague Island" and all the other "island" insults are deserved.
