HS2 - Cancel it now

Only in the UK could modernising the railway to a level enjoyed throughout Europe, and indeed Morocco, be called a vanity project!

I’ve looked at a Liverpool and Manchester weekend but open fares on the train are now £90. It’s unaffordable and I can’t always book well in advance.

Out of curiosity have any viable alternatives been costed to HS2 of how to connect the remote locations in the north to London via the other major cities?

Genuine question

Is that what it achieves? And is it good value?

I’d say it’s vanity in the sense of being a high-stakes project whose progenitors won’t want to back down whatever the level of deviation from original costs and other assumptions.

Was speaking to a guy a few weeks ago who has a event venue in Northamptonshire with a lot of land, some of which has been subject to a CPO for HS2, who informed me that even if it doesn’t go ahead he is still due the statutory compensation. Presumably that applies to a lot of land along the proposed route.

For that reason, along with the fact that a significant amount of the preparatory work has been undertaken at both ends, I reckon they’ll press ahead with the Birmingham to London route, but cancel the rest, with the funds (plus) being diverted into intra-northern rail investment in particular.

Well Manchester - Birmingham needs fixing, as does the transpennine route, Birmingham - Bristol and Cardiff - Swansea. Plus pretty much the entire midlands belt and branches off the east coast mainline. HS2 between London & Birmingham was the most pointless bit imo, but Brum is a black hole for trains.
